Did an oil change yesterday. Decided to use Mobil 1 Annual Protection. Only the best for my resurrected v! Still waiting for the parts to repair the right LED light so not using it more. Might risk cracking the housing or edge of the lens as it is somewhat loose. (Maybe 1 or two mounts are still intact from what I can see from the top)! Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Interesting never heard of it...what does the label say re: A1/B1 rating? I like to use the Mobil 1 filters too I get em from Amazon
These fancy bottles are basically an advertising medium. If you can manage: go to bulk oil, and you'll stop dumping all these oil contaminated bottles into the recycle stream, or worse, straight to landfills. Up here the dealership sells me bring-your-own-bottle Toyota 0W20 for $4.50 per liter. Their setup is just like a gas dispenser, even better: they enter a quantity and it dispenses it, accurately. The oil is the same Toyota 0W20 synthetic, just no bottles. Also, I'll stick with 6 months. Oil does change over time and use, and it seems to me using a quality oil and sticking to the more frequent change is a very effective one-two punch.
This is nothing new really. Just another marketing gimmick. The recommendation for real synthetic oil has been 1 year or 10K miles for some time now. Note that there is an * after the "Proven Protection for one full year" statement. I'd be interested to see what the * note actually says......if you can find it.

When I got my first car 55 years ago, I changed the oil every 2,000 miles. It has taken some real effort for me to run my Prius v on Mobile 1 for 5,000 miles. Factory says 10,000 miles, but they are in the business of selling cars. Also, I'm pretty fanatic about changing air filters, coolant, transmission juice, etc. Everybody quacks about getting 200,000 miles on their car. I was getting that kind of life 50 years ago. Cheap insurance.
I'd rather have a 6 month or 5k interval than use any annual marketed oil. I'd be interested if someone would do a UOA (used oil analysis) on the annual and tell us how it did. I come from a $50k-$200k car make where the advertised oil change intervals had to be shortened. The cost of twice as many oil changes is to me so trivial compared to the replacement of an engine that I make this choice. Not everyone should. I also consider that it is an effective marketing item when I sell the car. I tend to sell and not trade.
Mobil 1 0W-40 has a TBN of 12.6. Amsoil Signature line oils have a TBN of 12.6. Amsoil warranties an engine for 25k miles/1 yr following one oil change with the oil. Mobil 1 for Mercedes/Smart has a 10k mile/1 yr engine warranty. Both warranty against oil related failure. Total Base Number is a buffer against acid build up from combustion. (At least that is what Amsoil training tells us.) So if Mobil is using a TBN of 12.6 for 10k miles, it is already giving itself some serious cushion against issues due to longevity. The TBN of the Extended Performance, 15k mile warranty, and now the new Annual Protection, 20k mile, is hidden. Mobil did a video of three turbo vehicles they ran for 120k miles on 20k mile change intervals. The images of the engine parts look quite impressive.
it probably does a gret job protecting against wear, and at 20k in a year, tere probably isn't much contamination.
Sorry it took so long. (Didn't read "label")! I assumed ratings are available on the Mobil website. API SN, ILSAC GF-5, Ford WSS-M2C947-A GM dexos1 approval ExxonMobil recommended where GM 6094M is required.
My dad is retired. He stopped by my house and went into the garage. He likes to inspect things. He was pleasantly surprised when he saw the "J" on my vin. For those who don't know that means made in Japan. Let's be honest here you don't really need to change the oil on a Toyota. They will run forever on the original oil. I change my oil every 10k without fail but my dad thinks that is crazy even though he has my old Civic that needs an oil change every 10k miles. My dad asked me often, does a bear shit in the woods? So I ask all of you after watching this video.
Off hand those ratings do not sound too stellar, but I am not the expert. I will see if they have a bottle at Walmart next time.
That's what is on the 5 qt jug. I like the results shown on the one vehicle they videoed tearing down the engine. Wondered why they don't show the other two....
I use to be ocd about changing my oil but not with my Prius. Mine is a 13 and after 10k miles, it is the cleanest oil I've ever seen after an oil change. I'm 32, owned 7 vehicles and I've done all of my own maintenance.
Call me crazy, but I swear my engine is now quieter since I put in Mobil 1 Extended Performance (15,000 Mi). I was using Pennzoil Ultra Synthetic, which is refined from natural gas. When I changed to Mobil 1 (with good ol' crude oil) I immediately noticed an approximate 50% reduction in engine noise. Even if I'm just dreaming, I'll take it! The Mobil oil also has a very distinct and strong odor to it. I got some on my fingers, and I washed my hands about four times and I could still smell it. I always used Mobil in the past, I don't know why I changed. It's good stuff. Depending on how much I drive, I will change the oil once or twice per 12 months.
