I bought my Prius 6 months ago from a single owner who kept meticulous records. He had coolant system service for the engine at 105k miles and 14 months ago. The car only has 131.5k miles currently so you wouldn't think the coolant would be a concern. However, if you look at these photos, there doesn't seem to be any coolant in the reservoir. The inverter coolant is right up to the full line, so I guess it's possible they added coolant to that reservoir instead, but the flush was performed at a Toyota dealer so presumably they knew what they were doing. No engine temp lights in the 95*F weather here in Atlanta, but I imagine that doesn't come on until you're in big trouble.
If you service your car at the dealer, just ask them to top off the fluid next time. That way you won't have to pay $25 for a gallon of the Toyota SLLC coolant and use only a pint
A pint is about what I used out of the gallon I bought, but for me the peace of mind is worth $25 (although I topped up the inverter coolant, not the engine coolant).
I don't go to the dealer. I actually had the oil changed yesterday. I wanted to do Mobil 1 Extended Performance so I bought a jug at Walmart and brought it to a local shop. I did get the front tires replaced at a chain store a few months ago, Kauffman Tire, so maybe they might do it? My only concern is they might mix in Prestone or something.
To properly top off the engine coolant, you would need to remove the radiator cover to get to the radiator itself. Remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator until it's full. Then after that, you would need to top off the reservoir to the full line. Since the dealer did the service, I would just drive it over to them and have them top it off. You did pay for it afterall Don't mix the coolant, that's why you should let Toyota do it
Well sure, I know to stick with pink Toyota SLLC, but I can't speak for a random shop. To clarify, the coolant service was performed by the previous owner, not me, and that was over a year ago at a dealer that's an hour away. There is a closer dealer, 20 minutes away, but I don't know if that matters, especially since the car has a different owner now, and I definitely don't want to wait an hour just so they can sneak me into their schedule.
I guess I could have taken mine back to the dealer who had done it (I had both the engine and inverter coolant changed by them), but I don't mind having a jug of Toyota red sitting around anyway, since I have couple of other Toyotas with that coolant in the rad.
That's what I figured. My previous car was a 1997 4Runner and things were so much easier i.e. cheaper when I didn't give af about it, just oil changes. At least I'll have coolant available when I do the inverter drain and fill. 150,000 miles, right?
This is a bad sign. I checked my levels during a gas fill up and the reservoir has dropped from the full line to empty line in 9 days. When I pull out of my carport though, I don't see any coolant on the ground.
Water pump is leaking. Get flashlight and look at front of engine where the belt is for spots Zofcoolant. And stop telling us when it was changed last. Concentrate on the now you own it go buy a gallon of LLC from a Toyota dealer.
