I just got my Kdlinks dash cam installed in my prius. I used a 12vdc to 5vdc mini adapter and wired it to the homelink mirror power wires. It comes on when the car is started and stops when the car is turned off. This is the power adapter I used. I have had this dash cam for a year now and it works flawless, provides great images even at night in the rain. Slick install, but be very careful with that KDLINKS dashcam, I had one and the battery vented while parked.
I'm in the same boat. I'd check out r/dashcam on reddit, they always have useful information in the sidebar. FAQs, buyer guides, recommendations, etc. Definitely planning to get one eventually, have wanted one for years.
It takes fantastic pictures. A friend tech engineer friend of mine researched Dash cams for 6 months and then he bought this one. Most dash cams are not worth a crap at night when it is raining, this one still has good clarity under extreme conditions.
Here is the camera I use on all my cars. Compact and easy to install. I did use the hard wire kit and an add a fuse adapter. One important thing for me was to get a model without a battery. All the models with a battery wound up self destructing in the punishing Arizona summers. This model has a capacitor that works great. In fact, it saved me much more than it cost. An old geezer backed into my wifes car on the roadway. Why he felt the need to back up is beyond me. When I called his insurance company to get the car fixed they said the guy told them our car ran into him while he was stopped!...... When I emailed her the video the insurance company immediately took full responsibility and paid for the repairs.
Spacecoastbill is using this, I think: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is_s?k=b00uuqd9l6 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is_s?k=b00uuqd9l6 Personally, I have a Lukas 9370 WD dual camera installation. A little more expensive but for me it’s just another layer of insurance amortized over the life of the camera. This one has a capacitor as well and has a higher heat rating which is normally associated with higher quality in the research I did. I also modified it a little to make it more stealth by painting the silver bezel black.
This is kind of old, but I did eventually buy one. This one goes on sale often. I got it for $50, hiding the wires was pretty easy. Too lazy to hard wire it. The picture is pretty clear, and since it's behind my rear view mirror, I don't even see it.
