Has anyone found the photos and information regarding putting a switch or timer into the speed detect wire? There used to be a description of a timer on Yahoo to put inline.. -JM

It's because it was Wayne who documented the Mod, but he quit the YG and deleted all of his posts and files.
Maybe, he did make a post about doing this to his '04, and he did, very briefly post pics of it and then deleted them. But, there was also an old post in the Prius-YG for doing it to the '01-'03s that I thought I'd book marked, but can't find now. Anyway, the link I posted should help, but I'm not willing to go cutting wires unless and until I see detailed instructions and pics from someone else's moded '04. I sure wish Wayne would come back to the '04 Prius-YG or come here, or Prius Online.com or some place--his stuff was invaluable and it bothers me he left so abruptly and apparently in such a huff. --evan
Small question about this mod: If you cut the wire, and there is a recycle time of 20s, doesn't this mean that the refresh rate of the NAV screen will now be only once every 20s, instead of once a second (or so)? Unless I read the 1s thing wrong (which I could have)... -= Dave =-
I think you have it correct, basicly. You're just disabling the 'dead reckoning' ability so for the time period that the speed sensor is disabled you could get a little off track. That's why everyone suggests a switch or timer be installed so that it is just temporarily disabled, long enough to let you dial the phone or program the NAV (in neither case you wouldn't be looking at the GPS map anyway!) --evan
This mod is for the 2001-2003 not the 2004 which has a different NAV unit and wire colors. Please help with a 2004 mod if you have it. [email protected]
Wayne was nice enough to send me the instructions for the 2004. The NAV unit is now under the drivers seat instead of the passenger seat. The wire to be cut is solid purple. It's in a tight spot. I soldered twin leads about 3 feet long to the cut wire and a momentary NC switch from Radio Shack. I fed the switch under the center console and drilled a hole for it on the PASSENGERs side. Normal operation is restricted when moving. If I'm in the passenger seat and want to enter stuff, I must hold the button down. When I'n done it goes back to normal. No timer needed or wanted.

1. Look under drivers seat for purple wire in the rightmost connector. 2. Remove connector. 3. Pull back tape to expose more of the purple wire. 4. Cut and strip purple wire. 5. Solder a 4' wire to each end of cut wire. (use twin wire) 6. Plug in connector. Test NAV system at this point. 6a. THE FIRST TIME YOU POWER UP, the NAV system will reboot. Don't disturb until done. Reset map area to your area. 7. Route 4' wires to where ever you want the switch. 8. I put mine on the passenger side of the center armrest. 9. Remove armrest. (2 bolts inside box, under cloth pad and 2 screws at front sides. 10. Drill hole for a MOMENTARY NC switch. (Watch out for cup holders etc.) 11. Solder wires to switch and mount switch. 12. Replace armrest. Evan found a better place to cut the purple wire. He found the right bundle under the armrest, cut the wire and attched a shorter pair of wires to the NC momentary swotch. I would do it that way next time. I only use this mod when I'm a passenger. It's too dangerous to drive and input NAV data at the same time. This mod does NOT help getting Bluetooth to work while the car is in motion. Someone is working on a solution to that problem.

I just got my defeat switch installed. Here's what happens: On MAP screen, in normal mode, the car icon moves along slowly. Flip the interupt switch and the car icon freezes in place for, by my "in my head" count, around 30 seconds. It then jumps to your current location and moves along in a more jerky manner updating the position every 1-2 seconds. I assume that 30 second break is the system resetting...I think (no proof) that the GPS actually updates more frequently (like the every 1-2 sec. seen after reset). FYI, I'll post pictures and details at a later time, I did things slightly differntly than Steven describes above....I chose to cut the wire where it's bundled under the center console and just add about 1 foot extensions to the cut ends to avoid all the threading and longer wires. I didn't unplug anything. Also, see my other post, this mod does NOT allow full access, while in motion, to the bluetooth phone features....I suspect there's another wire that needs to be cut--shouldn't need a switch installed for that, just a cut wire I think.
I thought you could access the navigation system with the voice commands while you were moving. If this is right, I was wondering why you would have to do all of these modifications.
You're partially correct. Some NAV features are accessible both via voice commands and/or the MFD touch screen. But some features must be manually typed in. For instance...you're driving down the road talking to your friend Danny the Web Geek :mrgreen: and he invites you over for a visit. He gives you his address knowing you can just type it into the NAV and find your way. Well, you can't direct enter any address or even do a search for specific sites while the car is in motion without the MOD. Those buttons and screens are faded out and disabled. By doing the mod you (ideally a passenger since it really would require you to take your eyes off the road for prolonged times) can directly enter those addresses or do a search for a site without stopping. Hope that's clear.
A little off-topic, but while people are digging around under the seats by the NAV unit, any chance someone could take a glace and post what the make and model is? I'm pretty sure the unit is manufactured by Denso, but I'm curious what the model is (and if my contacts in Japan could track one down for me).
