I'm planning to head over to the dealership at some point today (finally)... I'm going for a #8.

The problem is color....I honestly don't find any of the colors particularly compelling (I currently drive a purple car and love that). I think I like the red and black best, possibly gray.

The dealer has an unallocated gray #8 on the way, to arrive in a couple weeks. Or I could order outright and they say I would get it in 6-8 weeks (which sounds REALLY fast to me, but I have heard really good things about this dealership, including quick order itmes, so who knows).

I'm honestly not in a huge hurry (though getting it in time for the tax credit would be nice), my car is still in good shape but I've had it for 7.5 years and ready to move on. I did just find some really nice photos of ilovemacs' red car (from the same dealership I'm going to) and am now leaning toward red....but I do think the black looks really sharp as well. And I just don't think I've even seen a gray one in person.

My husband is giving me the whole "black gets so hot in the summer" thing, but I live in Illinois - it's not like it's hot here all the time.

    Thoughts?

I've seen the Magnetic Grey in person, VERY nice. I have a Silver Pine Mica, it looks a lot better in person than the pictures in the book. The grey wasn't available when I was looking, and the SPM was sitting on the lot, unclaimed, so I drove off with it. :D

I also like the new red, but I liked the old red better. In the end, it's a prefference thing.

    Blue is the best color.

There is no such thing as "ordering outright." The dealers get an allocation but cannot request specific packages or colors. If the dealer has a large enough allocation, and a short enough waiting list, your waiting time for your prefered car will be shorter. Also, dealers can (and some will, but others won't) trade allocations with other dealers, improving your chances.

When the dealer said you could "order outright" what he probably meant was he'd put you on a waiting list for your prefered color and package. Again, your waiting time will depend on his allocation numbers and your particular choice of car. Some dealers give realistic estimates, others don't. I was told 3 months but got my car in two. Others have told horror stories of waiting and waiting.

It's been often reported here that by widening your shopping area you can greatly reduce your waiting time. Even at the height of the long lists, some people got cars very quickly by flying halfway across the country to pick one up.

Since you sound okay with grey, and you've had good reports about that dealership, I'd say go with the grey. It won't be as pretty as a blue, but you'll love it.

OK, this is good to know. To be fair, that wasn't the dealer's wording, it was mine and probably just a bad assumption on my part.

I don't mind waiting a while, but I would like to get it before winter. I wish I could see a gray one in person so I could make a better judgement. They have a silver one coming also, but silver is on my list of "definitely not" colors.

Well, I just found a #8 in black on the lot, available, at another local dealership. We're going to go check it out and see what kind of financing deal they can give us (I got a quote of 6.1% from a local credit union, not sure if they could beat that, but it would take a couple days to get the loan funded).

I "ordered" a Silver Pine Mica package 4 last week - the new charcoal color would work for us too.

If they gray is on the way and unallocated, you'll get that the soonest. If you're OK with that, then go with that.

I have black. I didn't like any of the colors either. I wanted a dark, blue, like the current Camry. While black takes some maintenance, if you ever have to get a repair, black is one of the easier colors to have body work done on. The pearl colors, like red, blue and driftwood cost more.

I personally like the gray interiors even though I have ivory. A gray with gray interior would be really sophisticated.

Black. Black doesn't get any hotter than the other colors; almost all of the interior heat comes through the windows.

Hello out there. My wife and I were waiting for a Prius in San Jose CA and were told that there were 185 deposits ahead of us.... WOW. However, we told the dealer that we would accept any color and moved up on the list if we took black. We had reservations about a black car, hard to keep clean, etc. We ended up getting the car and I couldn't be happier. Yes, the black shows dust and dirt, but we purchased a "California Duster" and now cleaning is a snap.

Lastly, the black really grows on you. Let me know if you have any further questions.

    I love my blue!
    keep reading all the threads.....
If it arrives- look at it before you take it...... but you won't be sorry- driving makes color irrevelant!

Ok, color = emotion. Speed of delivery = logic

It really comes down to this.....

If you want the car quickly you won't be picky with color. If you want a specific color and the dealer isn't allocated that color then you will wait. Maybe a long time.

It doesn't get any clearer than that with the Prius. This is because of the method Toyota hands out cars to their dealers.

Case done. Over and out. hehe

    Bottom line, enjoy the car.

    Cheers

    Hello --

<strike>I'm sure you already realize this, but</strike> you'll get the full tax credit if you take delivery on Sept 30th or prior (presuming you qualify -- most folks do). After Sept 30th, the tax credit will be cut in half.

$3,150 in your pocket vs. $1,575...

EDIT: Of course you realize this, because you just picked up a new Prius a few hours ago. Congratulations! (I just read your other post and realized that you walked into a deal a few hours after making this post)

Ohhh bps adds an important element.

    I must change one item:

    Speed of delivery = logic + $3150

    :)

My sister was prepared to sell her '04 and buy an '06 for the tax credit, but she had difficulty selling it for what she "needed" to get out of it to buy a newer one. She was feeling kind of down when things didn't work out, but then she saw the new red (which she didn't care for at all) and felt a lot better! She's now quite satisfied to keep her Salsamobile. :) I've only seen two of them VERY fleetingly on the freeway, so I can't make a judgement about the new color. Another poster said it looked a lot better in the sunlight, but I'm happy that my Salsa looks great in any light! I like the Silver Pine, but I wish they'd have a dark blue or green like the Classic.

Just thought of one more thing.

When you are sitting in the car driving it you can't tell what color you are driving at all. So are you trying to make someone else happy with the color your picking? hmmmm. :)

In the past, the color of a car was always a huge issue with me and I could rarely find a color that I liked.

I've found that with the Prius, you simply can't go wrong with any of their colors because every one looks great and I don't know how they managed to do that. :)

The color of mine is blue, I waited about 2 months for it. I've bought cars for the logical reasons such as lower milage on the car - but in the end - couldn't live with the color green. :) I think the second best color is the new red - it makes the car really eye catching.

Could it be because the left side of the brain has overcome the right side of the brain? :)
Otherwise one could be waiting to drive a Prius a very very long time. Sad but true.

The condition has a name associated with it.

    PAS

    Prius anticipation Syndrome

You look like this after months of waiting --->

go with your insticts, which are sound. you are 100% correct to choose pkg # 8 and either Black or Magnetic Grey are the coolest by far.
