There is a warmer specifically for the battery. Its purpose is to keep it above freezing, since that's the dropoff point where the electrical resistance significantly increases.

The battery uses the cabin temp, but also has its own heat for really cold days (<16°F) and uses the heat pump while no one is in the car and the doors are locked during the summer to cool the cabin for the battery to stay cooler. You have to select yes to the question that pops up right after shutting down the car. If you don't see the question pop up after shutting it down, it sees it isn't needed.

As far as I know my traction battery cooler only came on once, I select yes every time the message pops up. It was about 78°-80° over night and I guess my garage was a little warmer. I heard a strange whooshing sound and it turned out to be the fan for the battery cooler. I never use climate prep. ;)

So what pops up on the dialog has NO selected, and you left-arrow to YES and press select? I am not sure I understand the utility of this. It only applies if it hits a scheduled event, not when you say "charge now". But at least how I use the timer, the scheduled time is early AM (like 5am), and whether the car was warm when I last turned it off is long separated in time (and temperature) from when the charge event happens. So what is the point if asking me when I turn off the car if I want the cooler to be run 12 hours later?

It applies to the next charge no matter when. And yes, left arrow then select. Mine is set to 5:30 departure, so it is not really used except for that 1 time. I believe it is prompted according to the temp at power down. If it is not needed, it will not turn on. Some people charge immediately, so that is, I guess, the reason for the prompt at power down.

yep, the "battery cooler ..." screen pops up first, then the "charge now", so i agree

Just drove a 35.6 mile round trip with four people in the car on a near 100 degree day using AC all the way and pulled back into the garage with 0.7 miles remaining.

Pulled every trick I know to pull it off except drafting. Full charge, precool on grid power and left to recharge, left as traffic was starting to clear up so it would be slow in places but not stop and go, drove as smooth as I could, minimized regen but used it when I had to, even parked on the close side of the campus to slightly shorten the distance.

This is really pushing the round trip range on EV only. Funny part is, even 10 minutes on an L2 charger would have made it a non-issue. I hope they start to show up in usable places around here. Still haven't found one at one of my destinations in my state, and only one on my trip to Kansas City, which was in a park where we were attending a wedding.

I'm getting consistent 40s. I know someone here broke 42...i think toy needs to let us set the ev auto engine on threshold. I measure how much power and throttle in hv mode before the engine goes on and apply that or a little more in ev mode and that's how I'm able to get 40s. If I start to get to the speed limit I switch to ev mode to keep up.

Using gas to accelerate or climb and Ev mode to cruise or descend is cheating. In the trip I described above, the engine was not used at all, and I've never had my car in Ev Auto.

Mr. Jay, I'm with you; nothing but EV mode and driving like a Crippled Snail. I do try to avoid A/C, but unfortunately we're in a Monster heat wave right now, so only way to get great range is to drive real early or late in the day, to avoid the heat, and that ain't gonna happen when I'm visiting customers!!. This car is so well suited to the metropolitan driving environment, and I'm sure if you live out in the country with empty back roads, you're also maximizing the mileage benefits. It's only on the long freeway trips at higher speeds that you don't do as well. This is the Prime of life!!

I think your choice of words is quite questionable
    cheating.jpg

I am happy for you that you get the EV range that you get but all our circumstances are different and i for one am happy that others are liking what they can achieve with their Primes, and i am very happy with my Prime, still loving it. And if you want to call my driving style "cheating" because i maximize EV miles, you are entitled to your opinion, and that is all that it is ...

I meant "cheating" in the context of "maximum Ev range". You can use the hybrid system any way you like, but don't call acceleration and/or climbing with the gas engine and then using Ev for cruising and/or descending "maximum Ev range". It's not the same thing at all.

I was up to 31.6 estimated miles on my overnight charge this morning (sorry didn't get a pic...). That is probably the tops for me with a couple of hills on my commute. Very happy overall as current tank I've used 1/8 and have gone >850 miles so far! I don't "cheat" by using HV mode up the hills... ;)

For those posting estimated vs. actual, I agree that actual may be lower than the computer estimate. My round trip commute is ~23 miles and I can get home with an estimated 6-7 miles to spare. So, the estimate seems close but likely a little high compared to actual... But works for me! :)

Estimated EV range vs measured EV range can differ significantly.
In my case I can typically do at most 29-30 EV miles (mixed driving below 65mph ) with full blast A/C out of estmated 33-36 miles after full charge.
My lowest score was 26 EV miles on combined street/HWY route at 70-75mph.
The best one was 33 EV miles easy street driving below 50mph.

I agree. This technique is really just gaming the system. One is using energy from the ICE to climb the hill, and then recapturing the energy via regeneration on the downhill. With the right geography, one can get the system to report arbitrarily large "EV range" with this technique. I recall lots of arguments about this on the PiP forum, since it was pretty much the only way to get the "force charge" (recharging battery with ICE) behavior on the PiP.

This is not in any way a criticism about using this technique; just about how to interpret the numbers.

It may be gaming the system but consider this... I look at overall mpg. Me using ev straight up gives me 50% of the potential mpg I can get. So... My hybrid system is using less gas the way I drive it.

Looking at it as "overall MPG" is fine, just not as "maximum EV range".

I've noticed that the iPhone app sometimes reports more than the dashboard reports, and the actual mileage works out to somewhere between, although closer to the dashboard number.

Charging at home for the trip to work (19 miles, after which I charge at work, so no need to charge all the way), I usually stop at what the app calls 24-25 miles, which the dashboard reports as 22-23, and after I actually drive 19 miles to work it reports around 4ish miles left.

My commute is 26 miles, and when I get there I usually show somewhere between 8 and 12 miles left. Going home I usually get about 8 miles before the gas kicks in.
