Just for fun - I discovered that you can change how your navigation screen is oriented. I'm having a hard time deciding which I prefer - north always on top or the direction I'm traveling in always on top.

Ha! Well, I discovered it by accident. I can't tell you exactly, but it starts with pressing the N on the upper left part of the map..... You have 3 options for map orientation.

I've been switching back and forth and always seem to prefer the one I don't have at the moment.

i don't know why, but i've always preferred north. i've changed it ti traveling direction a few times to try it, but found it confusing. maybe because i always held paper maps north oriented.

Too used to my Garmin where the direction I am moving is always "north" on the screen. Plus I think it's a video gaming thing that I'm too used to at this point.

This option has been with us through all the Gen3 Prii since 2009, and perhaps earlier. It is only available to change when you're in Park. I use North-is-up mode when I'm far enough away that I might get lost, and North-can-move when I'm local and pretty know the roads and direction I'm actually traveling.

In my 2010, I like to use the split-screen mode, with the birds-eye view, 2 mile grid on the left (or even further zoomed out, on a long trip), with North up, and the right side showing a close up, several blocks view, with my heading up.

I'm not sure which way I should answer your poll. :)

I'm surprised that 'north up' is winning - just because I thought that navigation systems generally use the other approach. Then again, maybe I'm wrong about that. I've never had navigation before - just used my iPhone in my gen 2.

Question about the Prime map options: Is it possible to have it oriented pointing north AND have the location of your car at the bottom of the screen so that 50% of the screen isn't wasted? I've never seen a GPS that doesn't insist on wasting half the screen showing where I've already been unless it's in 3D mode.

Edit thanks to @Lee Jay's helpful observation:
Always north actually wouldn't work for having the pointer at the bottom. It theoretically could keep the pointer at an edge, always heading toward the center of the map, but that might be kind of disorienting as you make a turn and the map slides sideways to accommodate the new direction of travel.

That makes no sense. If it's pointing north, your car should be in the middle because you could be traveling in any direction.

I think I prefer the map to be oriented in the direction I'm going so I can easily determine whether the next turn will be to my left or right with a quick glance at the map. I know the lady says "turn left" or "turn right", plus there's an arrow pointing left or right, but if you haven't been paying attention, a quick glance is all you need.

You're right! Senior moment. It's the view that has your car alway pointed up that, on my gps, puts me in the middle when it doesn't need to. I guess what I really want it the map oriented stably and not spinning around as I turn, but keeping my pointer headed into the map rather than heading out from the middle. Hard to explain. Then again, that might need some rather gross and abrupt map movements as you make turns.

If you're in up-is-where-you're-going view, just close sound and climate and touch anywhere on the map. That puts you at the bottom because it closes the bottom menu.

Nice! When I do that in my Garmin, it will work for a little while, but doesn't work quite right. I could live with the up is where you're going if it used the whole map. Otherwise, I stay oriented better if the map makes it clear which direction I'm heading. Thanks!!

A "U-turn" is unlikely so I would prefer the car be in the middle of either side or top. Of course it could become a little funny at the boundary condition of traveling at a 45 degree angle. Maybe a circular map? <grins>

If I'm looking at a map, I always want north up... but with a nav display, I very strongly prefer the direction I'm heading to be up. I find that aspect to be especially useful if driving on winding roads, most especially at night! Seeing it like that on a nav display helps me to "plan" for bends in the road as I approach them, which is a "detail" most maps wouldn't display anyway due to scale restraints.
