No More 999.9MPG! (For a while)

    Why Toyota changed to MPG reading on the car to max out at 199.9 is beyond me ( even though it goes up to 999.9 MPG you just can't see it)

    ok, well then explain why the 2012-2015 PIP displays 999.9 MPG?:eek:

    Interesting.
    Before Gen 4 the other members of the Prius family maxed out at 99.9.
    The Gen 4 goes to 199.9. The instantaneous mpg bar graph beside the speed maxes out at 100 still though.

    Study of the market revealed an issue with diminishing returns.

    Customer understanding of the system overall showed little value reporting numbers higher than 200 MPG.

    Most people have no clue how the electricity & gas interplay. That's why Toyota only shows one electric motor on the display, even though there are actually two.

    Reporting mpg while consuming any energy besides that derived from gasoline is kinda stupid anyway.

    Did the poor response to the accelerator in HV mode continue after the initial warm up period? In my experience as others have mentioned in other threads, Prime draws power primarily from the traction battery during the warm up period. However, when you run out of EV in Eco mode, Prime seems to drop the performance/responsiveness to accelerator while drawing from the HV portion of the traction battery during the warm up period. I feel the response to the accelerator improves when it is out of the warm up period.

    That's true. However number looks more impressive. It's marketing thing.

    Reasonable question.

    I can't immediately recall how much it improved with warm-up. Power-split hybrids inherently have a little lag since it takes a little time for the engine to ramp up, MG1 to generate enough juice to MG2, and MG2 or negate the inertia of the car.

    In some ways that's not a bad thing, in that it gives a nice smooth start up, but it does represent lag though.

    I noticed two (related) interesting differences between HV on our new P.Prime and our 2009 (Gen-2):

    First, generally when the P.Prime's engine was on, it rarely got better than 50MPG. On our gen-2, I often see considerably better than that.

    Buuuuuut...

    Second, the P.Prime's engine would turn off completely considerably more often than the gen-2'so. Obviously completely off is a lot better than being on and getting high MPG!

    That's of course possible in large part to the (MG1) speed-reduction planetary-gear not present on gen-1 or gen-2. That's a big part of why the P.Prime can go up to 84MPH on EV.

    The P.Prime's license plates came in, so I had to pick them up, swap them with the vanity plate "EADGBE" previously on the 2009, and then get a toll tag for the P.Prime (swapping their plate-number records too).

    Anyway, that took more than 30-some-odd miles, so I had to burn a little gas.

    911 miles, and the original fill-up is still about 80% full! Trying to remember: 11-gallon tank, is it?

    Sometime in the next few weeks, I'll probably take it down to Houston to show it off to my mom and sister -- a ~375mile round trip. That'll burn that tank down a bit, but still have a fair amount left!

    After I burn down that tank, I'll probably plan on going to the gas station once every 6 weeks or so, putting in 5ish gallons each time. That is, unless I take a road trip, of course.

    The tank is stated at 11.3 gal. and when my miles to empty went to 7 miles left, I filled up with 10.35 gallons, no topping, first click.
