A good friend restored one from the early '60s, a 1000cc. It was an Estate, quite rare here, wasn't too bad even when he got it, but immaculate after he'd restored it, I suspect better than when it came out of the factory, the paint particularly.

Rust isn't a problem to the degree it is in UK.

Rust was a major problem for vehicle in UK because of the salt used on roads in winter. Of course, cars these days are better rust-proofed, but corrosion is still a major factor. The Morris Minor Estate, affectionately known here as the Moggy Traveller was much loved but suffered from degradation. I found this link shows what prices are like here now(ish), but the pictures aren't very good......

Wth??? That dude must have hands made out of tree bark!

Or driving while wearing some type of rough gloves?

Or have some type of lotion or something on their hands?

    That's hard to believe.

It's not just the one car/driver. There are (at least) 4 different wheels in this thread with the same problem.

Very odd. We need to find out what those four people have in common. A common denominator. Do they all park and drive in extreme heat? Wear gloves? Are they rubbing some type of cleaning solution on the steering wheel? Armorall? Do they have long fingernails? LOL

Fortunately, mine looks like brand-new after 16 months. I use a lot of hand sanitizer, and sometimes it gets on the steering wheel. But the softex looks fine. I mostly drive-through hotter states with lots of sunshine. Hasn't had any effect on the steering wheel. I know several people that have Toyota vehicles with softex. None of them have had that problem.

    Thanks for your photo.

Did the material on yours blister up before tearing away?

I think that's what happened to mine -- but not sure since it happened on the backside of the wheel.

Good news for me is the worse spot is small and not where I normally hold the wheel -- bad news is that there is a blister extending from it that seems to be growing.

I park outside, but when there is sun in New England, its not like Vegas. No store-bought oils on my hands and never any Armorall or anything like -- ever.

I expect more reports from others.

It just started to come apart. Flakes off by itself.

That sounds to me like it's come into contact with something that degraded it. Question is, what?
