I have a 2017 Prius model 2. It has a Carplay button on steering wheel, just to the right of the phone buttons for call and hangup. Have an iphone 6 with up to date software and a CarPlay option in the General settings. My iphone will pair using Bluetooth. The car will read out loud text messages coming in on my phone. I can place calls through the car on mt iphone. I feel like my phone connects to the car and works over Bluetooth very well. So I pressed the steering wheel carplay button with the face and little voice symbol. I trained the car using ten phrases. When I press the button it says: What do you want me to do ? If I say something like: "Send text message", car responds "sorry, the phone does not do that". When I go to the phone Settings -> General -> Carplay, it says no cars found. I press the button as the iphone says to do and all that happens is that Carplay in the Prius starts and asks what to do. So the car side works, the phone is paired, calls can be made, text messages read out loud. But no carplay ? Can anyone shed some light on this ?
Ummm, you don't have Apple CarPlay. It isn't installed. Toyota doesn't put it in the car. You CAN do lots of stuff using Siri which will play through the the car's speakers but you have to activate Siri using your phone button or saying "Hey Siri" (if you have that feature activated). I sure wish Toyota would pull their head out and pony up for CarPlay..... Oh, and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!
I am sorry you lost your owners manual, here is another: https://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om-s/OM47B54U/pdf/OM47B54U.pdf On page 503, it talks about the Voice Command Button, which is where you think a Carplay button resides.
Thanks, I realize now that the Carplay picture on the iphone is not the same picture as the Voice Command button on the steering wheel, and everything written here is correct. The manual actually says "an iphone cannot reply to text". So it sure does a lot of cool stuff, and I can still dial by voice (siri is on), has my contacts list synced, reads incoming text messages, simultaneously allows for my ipod as a music player and my phone as a phone and a second music player. A lot of features for a basic car. Looks like they provide an Entune 1 (which I have in the prius 2) and Entune 2 which is the premium version. I was mislead by other forums on apple and such that made it sound like using the voice command would function like carplay, which is not true. Thanks everyone, case closed. I wonder if we should actually delete this whole thread!
You can also activate Siri by pressing the voice control button for a longer period of time, maybe2 seconds then releasing it.
No! Don't delete the thread. You may be the first with this issue, but by relating it here others may be spared the frustration in times to come. The Prius certainly has the power to confuse folks in any number of ways.... .. and welcome to Prius Chat.
No, don't delete this thread! It's an important one. It's also worth noting that you can't sort your music unless you plug your phone into the USB port. Then you can use your playlists, sort by composer/artist/album, play your saved podcasts, etc. I don't see that happening with my Android phone over bluetooth. I use an iPod plugged into the USB port for my entertainment.
