ok since reading this thread, i've started to worry about my hids. what can we do to protect it? get a special alarm just for them?

Check Bulldog Alarms website. They have an inexpensive alarm that will go off on shock/vibration. Its sensitivity can be set for as light as a tap on the hood. Maybe it'll warn off the marauders at first pry.

 

wow, i didn't get HIDs or fogs, but plan on putting fog lights in later...


...that makes me think about putting in foglights... i wonder how someone got the hood open? did you possible leave it unlocked? or worse, maybe someone knows how to unlock it?

 

I'm confused (sorry).
Do all of the 2006 Prius models have these frequently stolen headlamps?

Not all. HIDs come with Packages 6, 7 and 8. http://www.toyota.com/prius/options.html

 

I'm sad to say that I finally have a reason to post something. My car got brutalized friday night by someone attempting to steal my lights. And of course my expensive dealer-installed alarm didn't go off until they had already done $2,000 in damage. They dented my fender and rim and destroyed my front bumper in what I can only assume was an attempt to get to the fog lights. They didn't touch the hood so I'm guessing they weren't going for the headlights or were just saving that for later. The only good part is that the alarm finally went off before the @$$h*!es had a chance to make off with the lights. I'm off to the dealer to complain and see if they can increase the sensitivity of the alarm. Just a warning to those in Sacramento - be on guard for this.

 

Does anyone believe conventional car alarms actually deter theft? How many times have you walked by a car with it's alarm going off and investigated? Called the police? HA!

They go off constantly in Chicago and are utterly useless. Just more background noise. A professional theif will have what they want quickly anyway, further decreaasing the usefulness of a noisy alarm.

Now anti-theft devices with with tracking or lockout work. Noisy car alarms would be much more effective if they ONLY went off when there's an actual theif. Frequent false alarms decrease their usefulness.

 

I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but...

wire an IR motion sensor with the car in its field of vision to a light or alarm somewhere inside your home. Next time it's tripped, call the police.

To the OP: Don't go all vigilante on anyone; is it seriously important enough to you to cause physical harm to someone who's desperate enough for bread that they'll risk jail time to get their hands on your headlights?

You should take pity that people in this country are in such bad states that they feel compelled to steal anything.
