Electricity cost more than gasoline these days.

There have been some threads on here that argue using more charge cycles from the battery is worse off than wear and tear on the gas engine. The battery has a finite number of charge cycles and will wear out faster than the gas engine. We can certainly argue but there isn't enough data to point one way or the other.

This way you'll be able to sell a antique Prime with a brand new engine. Seriously, the ICE has a very good charging potential on the road.

 

Don't forget to update your will and testament to pass on the brake pads to your survivors.

What I'm suggesting is we don't have metrics on how long these Prime traction batteries last. In contrast, one of our former cars continues to run over 172,000 miles on the original brake pads and shoes.

Unlike the Gen-1 Prius, there has been a lot of development and improvements in traction battery management. It turns out we do have data for the first generation, PiP: 2013 Toyota Prius PHEV | Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity

So I took a quick look at the PiP traction battery aging:



I'm sorry but looking at these numbers, the PiP did pretty good. Of course I've assumed the PiP has a similar LiON traction battery to the Prime and that has not been asserted. But we do know the Prime capacity is significantly larger.

true - but, there is SOME data. There are hybrids that have traveled over a ¼mil miles, & there are a handful of Model S's that have traveled over a ¼mil miles. So - people that say such things are in part - speaking out of ignorance. The cost to rebuild both the ice & traction pack are pretty similar to rebuilding just one huge traction pack. The reliability of both ICE & traction packs continues to increase. Also, traction packs continue to drop in price, while costs to rebuild an ICE continues to cost more. Just something to think about.

Based on ordinary Li-ion technology, I can give you a mathematical argument on why the battery should last more than 150,000 Ev-only miles before losing 15% of its capacity.

An ICE won't last that long on very short trips. It will last much longer than that on longer trips.

 

i guess you would have to research corolla chat, or some such, to find out how many ice problems they are having.

 

true, but our area is one of those expensive gasoline areas. And we are in the area where the largest amount of cars exist. Just one of the factors to toss into the mix.
Saw several stations that were charging around $3:50 /gallon through our travels down to San Diego yesterday.

I, like many around here charge via surplus solar. Our 2nd ev though, means the meter will run forward ~ $25/month - for the extra 1Kmiles of gasless driving.
If we are filling up the hybrid Lexus (which we seldom Drive anymore) prices for regular run between $3:29 / $3:49 thru out the city - according to quick look on gasbuddy.com.

that's why i say electricity costs more than gas in only a handful of places.

 

EV: $.13/kWh x 6.5kWh = $.85 (25mile range)

HV: $2.30/gallon = (about 50mile range)

So to go 50 miles EV cost me around $1.70 and HV mode cost me around $2.30

EV is slightly cheaper especially when I charge at free ChargePoint stations.

The cost varies every month depending on your usage. Xcel energy list rates per kWh on their website.

I think if I stay under 500 kWh total monthly usuage (tier 1) the rates are cheaper than (tier 2) which is over 500 kWh.

The NJ dealer finally got my plates and FedEx over to me tomorrow. Can't wait to drive legally again!

That depends on the cost of fuel for your trip until you get home to recharge.

Its much more complicated than that. The engine has a warmup penalty, after that it's very efficient. On a short trip I like to start in HV. With slow city traffic the engine keeps the charge up with very little loss, then once on the freeway I switch to EV. I'll use most of that, if getting low I'll switch back to HV. No matter what the dash says, it's really a blended mode and whenever the load changes (hills) then the blended mode also changes. The car is smarter than I am and programmed thru many computers to operate at peak efficiency.
Unless you change the programming by stomping on the accelerator.
