Traction battery Cooler

I usually leave the car windows opened in the garage and ignore the "A/C while charging" question. Does it mean it will cool the garage, too?

 

I would guess it is like using AC to cool the house with the windows open.

 

Your right about gibberish, the few times it's popped up on me, I did not understand what it was saying, when I
Tried to make a change, nothing happened, and then it shut off and I could not get it back. Probably the safest action i.e./was if you are hot turn on the AC. Toyota always recommended it for the HV Batttery. And since we now have a larger lithium HV battery it could be critical this summer. Why it isn't a automatic cooling system incorporating cool air I don't understand.

Cost to whom? The car has a AC, The hybrid battery is what needs protecting. Prediction: ****** This summer thier will be Prime owners driving up Pikes Peak or similar hills, driving 75-80 or faster// W/O AC on and finding that thier cars become unusable, but, no fear, they are at the peak!

 

would it affect their epa rating?

Below may not be a direct solution to the original question, but it may be one functionally. When power off, the message disappears quickly (with the default setting of the traction battery cooler being off). If you use Start timer with climate on, wouldn't it do what we want it to do, turning the cooler on?

 

So what is the battery cooling function? Is it (for example), a parameter that makes the battery cooling fan run on after the car is shut down, for some length of time. Maybe monitoring battery temp too?

Sounds like a bit of a fail by Toyota, that after 3 pages of concerted perusal by dedicated Prime heads (and onlookers), not that much has been resolved.

 

My understanding is that it is a combination of turning on the heat pump and fan to control the traction battery at a set operating temperature range in a hot ambient air temperature. Unlike battery heater, we do not appear to have a way to set it on as default.

 

I've seen the message pop up a few times when I turned the car off after long trips on warmer days. But it quickly goes off the screen before I can react to it.

So starting at zero ... how do I turn this to ON?

 

Traction battery cooling is an automatic feature unless you say "no" in the dialog box or turn it off in the Meter customization settings (Pg-234). The dialog box only displays if cooling is needed when the system is turned off. To re-display press the start button to turn the system back on then turn it off again. if cooling is needed the dialog box should display again.

 

It seems Toyota made it inconsistent here. Usually when you see a popup dis play , the default is selected, which is NO in case of Charge Now.

Try the back button to get the message back, ie the button to the lower right of the enter button, (the back button looks like a u-turn sign turned sideways with an arrow) the enter button is surrounded by the up down left right toggle on the right side of the steering wheel. Then if you get the message to appear again use the left or right arrows to answer YES and then push the enter button to save your selection.

Full disclosure: I have not done this myself, just offering an opinion based on similar experiences with how the Prius screens and save functions work.

 

A new and better way to obtain information. Do not do it yourself, instead recommend a procedure and let others try it. Upon the results, progress may happen or not happen. The important thing is you have initiated a
Solution w/o ever proving it at the same time absolving yourself of any responsibility by proclaiming, " I never actually did this myself. Signed Gen 3 for me.

There were 52 other replies before mine. I had no reason to find the solution by having someone else do the work since my car is not giving the message about the Traction Battery Cooler. I was only trying to offer a fresh perspective to the original poster, but made it clear that I had not tried it myself. My only motive was helping the original poster.

In hindsight, I just have to wonder why the battery-cooling fans exhaust into the cabin rather than to the outside air? Always have on Prii...

Intake, yes, sure, so that you can cool the air, but seems like not only an issue of cabin-heat while charging, but exhausting to the outdid would also reduce noise.

Then again, if I lived in Winnipeg, say, rather than Austin (TX), maybe I'd be thankful for it heating the cabin...

Liquid cooling is a much better approach...
