Which affects fuel economy so much?

In addition to using the wrong spec'd oil, overfilling oil has repeatedly been linked to a sudden reduction in MPG. As others have suggested, drain and refill properly with the correct weight oil.

 

The 12V is FUBAR. Put it on the stock electric fence and then came ollect them from the neighbors in 3 months.

2016 Three Touring versus Three-
Started driving Prius 2007-that car gets 45mpg right now
Yesterday bought Three Touring (wanted Three with ATP but did not want moonroof so settled with Touring with the Adv Tech features I wanted). DID NOT CONSIDER 17" tires enough I guess.It got 27.9mpg today!I was expecting 55+ .Has anyone else heard of horrible initial mileage on 2016 models?

 

nope, you're the only one. and here's the scary part, the 17's are only 1 or 2 mpg of your problem. get thee back to the dealer, asap!

 

Give it a tank or two. 28 mpg could be a short run to the grocery store with a stone cold engine?

Our third gen is on 17" Michelin Pilots, and calculated summer tanks are around 4.5 liters per 100 km (52 mpg), when I try hard.

 

I'm running on 225/45/17 and I just got a computer reading 3,5l/100km (67MPG I guess) when I drove to work. AVG speed was 73km/h (~45 miles/hour). Just wondering what is the rolling specification of the tires you're using? I'm having a Toyo NanoEnergy2 wheels and they are rated A class.

 

There aren't official rolling resistance specifications in North America. Michelin does have a crude table of RR, and rates the Pilots not so good.

Your speed of 73 kmh is right at the ceiling for electric-only propulsion, that might help with your crazy good fuel economy. That and your tires, and I suspect your careful technique.

I don't think I've ever see the computer displayed fuel economy lower than 3.9. In summer, avoiding short errands and driving carefully, the display will stay around 4.2.

Here's my latest on horrible mpg with new three touring.Took advice to contact dealer.They acted stunned.Had me go out and hold one of the trip clearance(sorry still getting to know Gen4 versus 2007s) buttons.I had cleared mileage before starting home the day I bought it,but whatever they had me do cleared all. Then drove two miles around neighborhood as they requested and it looked like was going to be great mpg at first.Was seeing 70 until uphill returnwhen ended up at 51.....but after being in the 20s I was elated for 51.
Next day drove to beach.In my 2007 Prius I cld get 60mpg on this drive-you're going down state. This time with 2016, I got just over 50.Certainly better but not close to expectation after reading other people's mpg.
I will say it rides like a dream though!

 

I didn't see anyone mention tires,.....my 2010 got up to 53.7 mpg on a trip...I had to change the OEM tires at 30,000 miles...I changed to cooper 90,000 rated tures,,,,,now I am getting 43-48 mpg.....my next tires will be energy savers or bridgestone ecopia....I would appreciate and comments on tires......

 

you're absolutely right. look at what toyota did with the gen 4 two eco tires. i just replaced the oems with energy savers, and they are so smooth and quiet, i just can't believe it. mpg's didn't bat an eyelash.

 

Cooper makes some great tires; but most models are not noted for being fuel efficient.

 

Does anyone know what the largest size tires are that will fit on the OEM 15" rims? And what, if any, effect on mpg would larger tires have? I'm trying to improve the ground clearance - larger tires seem to be the only choice for that.
