Prime in Canada?

    If you go to Buffalo NY you won't get the rebate of around $8000 or so. I got the rebate by comparing to the Audi E tron.Similar battery size.

    no offence, but can you elaborate on your source? I mean, each dealer I've spoken to have a had a different impression of if/when/how the Prime will/won't/can't/is coming to Canada. Are you sure you have been given your info on good authority?

    my source is a General Manager of a large Toyota dealer...I reached out to him after not getting any solid information each month from the salesman after putting $1000 down in March 2016.

    Just opened an e-mail from may salesmen.He was sorry to inform me that the Prime will not be available in Canada until Jan. 2018 except for Quebec where it will be available this spring because of the Provincial governments zero emission legislation that just passed ,similar to California's. Man that really sucks is the Prime really worth a years wait.

    Thanks for the update.

    It might not matter to some but if Entune comes to Canada starting with the 2018 Camry, it might not be so bad. Otherwise, those getting a 2017 model may miss out on features such as smartphone remote A/C/heater and charging status, along with HD traffic.

    According to Toyota Canada vehicles will only be sold in Quebec no exceptions.

    Was wondering: does Canada offer clean-car incentives like the US is currently doing? Not just for the Prime, but for other EVs or clean cars currently available in Canada? If so, what is amount? Without the incentives it certainly does make plug-ins and EVs more expensive, and many people might be less apt to buy them.

    As far as the Prime only being sold in Quebec so far... don't know how car registration works in Canada, but could one buy it in Quebec, then drive home to Toronto and have it registered in Ontario once it's been purchased? If someone in, (for example) Iowa wanted a Prime (or a Chevy Bolt, or a car not offered yet in Iowa) and drove to California to purchase it, it would still be allowed as far as I know, as long as it didn't come into conflict with any Iowa regulations (and the clean cars are usually way out ahead in compliance).

    You can buy a car in Canada in a different province, but you will have to pay provincial sales tax when you register it in your province.

    There are no Federal incentives that I'm aware of for EVs. There are in certain provinces. There might be a problem getting those if the province you are in doesn't list the Prime (because it is not sold there).

    Unfortunately I could not wait until 2018 and need a new car now. I saw no BEV or PHEVs in my price range with sufficient size, reliability and range for my family's needs, so I am picking up a new 2017 Prius Base tomorrow in Hypersonic Red. Not as efficient or nice looking as the Prime, and I don't get rebates but it will certainly do the trick for now. I expect in 5 years when its time to replace my other car BEVs or PHEVs will be the clear choice. Maybe a 2nd Gen Prime

    Mr Beale is correct if you buy the Prime in Quebec you will not get the EV rebate in Ontario because the Prime is not even listed as an eligible vehicle for 2017 on the list of all EV's that get rebates in Ontario. When toyota releases the prime in Ontario it will be on the site.

    GBD85 if I may suggest I would go onto leasebusters get a short term lease for 12 months and then purchase a Prime next year . You may regret not waiting for the plug.

    No federal incentives. Only 3 provinces offer incentives - Ontario, Quebec and B.C. (I believe PEI no longer offers any?). The provincial incentives are rebates so everyone is eligible for it regardless of income. (unlike the U.S. tax credit).

    Ontario offers the highest - up to $14,000
    It's in tiers:

    Start with the base:
    5-16kWh = $6,000 to $10,000

    If battery capacity > 16kWh = +$3,000
    If seating capacity = 5 or more = +$1,000
    If MSRP is => $75,000 and <= $150,000 then maximum rebate = $3,000
    If MSRP > $150,000 then $0 (no rebate)

    Quebec offers up to $8,000

    EV with MSRP <$75,000 = $8,000
    EV with MSRP $75,000-$125,000 = $3,000

    PHEV with MSRP < $75,000:
    4-6.99 kWh = $500
    7-14.99 kWh = $4,000
    >15 kWh = $8,000

    Hybrid with combined FE < 6.33L/100km = $500 (2017 is the last year. No hybrid incentive for 2018 model year)

    H2 with MSRP < $75,000 = $8,000
    H2 with MSRP $75,000-$125,000 = $3,000

    Low-speed EV = $1,000
    EV motorcycles = $2,000
    Limited-speed motorcycles/electric scooters = $500

    B.C. offers two tiers:

    4-15 kWh = $2,500
    >15 kWh = $5,000
    Fuel Cell = +$1,000 (on top of $5,000)



    One is free to purchase in a different province but you'll have to pay to ship it over (or somehow get temp registration). You will pay the sales tax in the province which the vehicle is registered. For the rebate to be applied, (e.g. buy in QC, reg in ON), it has to be first registered in Ontario. But Ontario doesn't list the Prime yet.

    Also, I think Toyota Canada wants the sales credits so it'll want to sell (and register) as many cars in QC as it can to build up credits before the 2018 model year. They're also waiting for the law to actually pass so that they can determine the MSRP. Bill 104 is, in my opinion, the reason for the delay of any pricing or actual launch of the vehicle. They're waiting to see what QC does.

    Which is why Toyota Canada is in a "holding pattern". It'll cause more problems if they launch the Prime then adjust when the bill gets through. Might as well just wait til QC figures out what it wants to do and then launch the car.

    Thanks Tideland, for the detailed info on the status in Canada. Interesting that the few provinces that are giving the credit are giving a substantial one (ie, Ontario). I think incentives in general ($ back, HOV, parking, what have you) help sell a more expensive -- but better for everyone -- car in the marketplace, until they become commonplace. Wishes of the current US Administration aside, the minimum fuel efficiency standards (and the mandate from states like Calif to have a percentage of all company's cars sold in the state be zero-emission) have also definitely helped prod the manufacturers and the market..

    Ontario also issues green plates for those who want access to the HOV lanes as a single occupant (as well as no-charge on tolled HOVs, called HOT)

    BC provides HOV access as well via a small sticker attached to the rear of the vehicle.

    The rebates in either provinces in the east provide an interesting conundrum for Toyota Canada when it comes to pricing the car.

    Requirement:
    They need to sell as many Primes in QC to either build credit or to meet the legislative requirement of selling 3.5% of their total sales (I assume total in QC) as EVs.

    Problem:
    QC's rebate will provide about $4,000 to potential customers in QC. However, Ontario provides about $7,400 for potential buyers in ON. Ontario has a larger population (50% more).

    See the problem?

    They need to sell in QC but ON has the better deal plus more potential buyers that will chip away at the inventory.
