Wheel locks or not? My Prime didn't come with wheel locks option. I am thinking to purchase wheel locks myself. However there are two tone wheel cover to cover factory alloy wheel. Do I need the wheel locks?
What is the resale market for a thief to sell stolen Prius wheels? If the thief can't sell them, he'll steal something he can sell. I didn't buy wheel locks.
Wheel Lock P/N is 00276-00900. I thought its used for a lot of different Toyota and Lexus models. How come when I did a P/N search on eBay lots of posts said it's not compatible with 2017 PP? What did I miss?
Our 2010 came with wheel locks, I finally got tired of farting around with them every time the wheels came off, got 4 extra regular nuts, swapped them out. One downside, beside the hassle: it takes just one absent minded mechanic or tire shop employee, forgetting your locking socket in his pocket, for a day or two, and you're screwed. A good tip if you're using them: tape your phone number to the socket. Similarly, a travel tag with your phone number on the fob is good too.
Wheel locks are more hassle than they are worth. It's unlikely people steal Prius rims. One tire mechanic misplacing the locks is all it takes to ruin your commute months down the line when you've forgotten who had them last. And then you can also just watch this video to see how safe wheel locks are.
Question ... Where is the "socket" stowed? I believe wheel locks came with my vehicle, but I haven't tried removing them yet.
On our 2010 there was a pocket for the locking socket, in the tool "caddy", the plastic piece holding the scissor jack and associated parts. A tip: when removing lug nuts start with the lock nut, and when torquing do it last. Accomplishing the latter, AND following a star pattern, takes some mental aerobics. Yet another reason I stopped using them, lol.
The lug nut needs to be the Toyota alloy wheel type (hold the wheel with the washer, not the cone on the end of the nut), the correct thread diameter and pitch (threads per inch or mm per thread), outside diameter, and length. Maybe ignore "Prime." Look for 2016 Prius 5 door (the 4th generation Prius). I think they're all the same if they have the alloy wheels. Probably the same for other small Toyotas. Amazon shows 00276/00900 for $34.17 shipped.
I know wheel lock is not thief proof lots of YouTube video showing it. At least it will take some time to remove than no wheel lock. Hopefully thief to be will see the wheel locks and decide to find an easier target to steal.
Agreed, it would be hard to pound a socket over a wheel lock in the middle of the night or day without attracting some attention.
