Cutting in a sun roof?

Another advantage besides the bigger boot an Ioniq has over a Prime,a sun roof is available !
It's a shame Toyota didn't think of it,but then what was well thought out considering TNGA anyway ?

 

Toyota might have been thinking the additional weight for fuel economy testing, glare on the large screen, or some other factor.

 

The official testing involves weight classes. Cutting 5 pounds might not mean changes in results on the road, but if it gets the car into a lower weight class for the testing, then it will be easier to get better results.

 

It looks good, and I want to do the same. But I had a sunroof cut into my Maxima here in San Diego at ASC (American Sunroof Corporation). I believe they pioneered the sunroof about 30 years ago. The physical installation is beautiful. It looks as close to factory as you can get. However, even though they are the leaders, they wired it wrong. I've taken it to multiple mechanics and 12V guys. One discovered that they had wired it to a wire that goes to my trunk solenoid for power (it needs it's own 20 amp circuit). That caused all kinds of crazy problems. I got that fixed (not by ASC because when I brought it back to them, they inspected it and said everything was done properly. Now, even after fixing that, I'm still having problems. I've gone through three or four batteries in the 16 months since installation. I hear a motor cycling frequently in my Maxima that must be the sunroof motor, but I can't track down what they did wrong. I've wasted countless days and nearly $1,000 dollars on replacement parts and rewiring, as well as Uber rides to and from service facilities. It has cost me at least seven days of my time, and I've had to have my car towed three times due to drained batteries and associated problems. It has been nothing short of a nightmare. Given the complex electronics in the Prime, I'm very reluctant to have one installed.

Hi James - I know they can turn out beautifully. The one in this thread and Sara's (that you just linked to) both look great. The one on my Maxima looks really fantastic. My mechanic and my stereo installer can't believe how good it looks. But it has been a nightmare in terms of the wiring. I went to the company that is supposed to be the best one out there, and I still got 16 months of headaches.

 

Can you help me understand the wiring complexities...Seems to me there needs to be a single 12V wire that provides power to the motor...It should only be active when the car is ON so you should never have a dead battery problem unless the thing was running continuously and drawing more than the car could provide to the 12V system when running.

Makes me think there is more electronics here than I am envisioning?

 

There shouldn't be any complexity to the wiring. When I had the sunroof installed, I never gave a second thought to the wiring. I was only concerned about whether it would look right because that should be the only difficult part. The sunroof I bought does need a constant-on because the sunroof shuts itself when you turn the car off. When I started having problems early on, I brought it back to them. They said they had done everything right, but would change the wiring so that the sunroof would start to close after the car is turned off, but stop after any door had been opened. That way, they said, it wouldn't be drawing any power.

I don't know why I'm still having problems. The opinion of my mechanic, his father (a retired mechanic) and my stereo installer is that when they first installed the sunroof, the improper wiring they did damaged the sunroof and now the motor is cycling continuously for many minutes after I shut the car off sometimes. I believe they are right. But now ASC still refuses they did anything wrong. This type of blatant incompetence isn't always going to be a problem, but it is an example of how incredibly wrong things can go with a sunroof install. And remember, these are the pioneers of the sunroof. They regularly do installations for local dealerships. Even the Toyota dealer I just bought my Prime from recommended I go to them when I mentioned the lack of a sunroof.

 

For others in the future, I recommend going to classic soft Trim since they will cover their products and work for as long as you own the car. Not to mention they have spots all over the US.
