Thanks for the suggestion. I was just looking at a review of the accord hybrid. The car is quite larger than a Prius, and is not a hatchback. It is also significantly more expensive (if one gets the Prius base model, as I did and would with a Generation 4.) I'll have to think about all that.

agreed. there really isn't any prius competition per se, until the ionic is available.

And I'd want to wait for the second year of the Ioniq so that the manufacturer has time to work out the kinks.

As I pointed out in the very first reply, manufacturers and customers are on very different pages on this issue.

On every car my household has owned over more than four decades, the maximum oil consumption rate that the manufacturer would consider to be 'Not A Warranty Problem', was greater than the entire oil volume over the longest allowed oil change interval. So regular oil checks between service visits were required.

Drivers usually got away with less frequent checks, or none at all, because most individual cars didn't burn anywhere near that much. At least at first. But a certain small fraction of cars did burn a lot. And for those who didn't check, and got burned, it wasn't covered under warranty.

You are free to file suit. Fellow owners of my Subaru model did, and got a settlement last summer (Subaru Oil Consumption Class Action Lawsuit). I see an ongoing case for other Toyota models, not including Prius (Toyota Oil Consumption Defect Lawsuit - Car Attorney). I don't quickly see any active Prius suit, but someone is trolling for Prius clients with problems (Toyota Prius Oil Burning-Class Action Investigation - Chimicles & Tikellis LLP).

Any other readers out there who haven't personally checked their oil in over 1000 to 2000 miles, and who don't wish to be test clients in a lawsuit, go check your oil level RIGHT NOW!

Bisco, why do you think the Ioniq is a "much better product?"

they aren't known to burn oil around 100,000 miles.

but i was thinking of the plug in, with full hatch space and 5 seats.

Stupid question: Is a 110-volt outlet in the garage suitable for recharging a car in the driveway? (Of course I'd need an extension cord probably). How far will the car go between charges?

What else is active on the same garage circuit? 'Nothing' is best. I.e. Lights will usually be turned off, and other convenience outlets inactive during recharging, but a garage freezer or refrigerator on the same circuit would be a problem. Trip the breaker and see what goes out.

Extension cords may also be discouraged. Can you park close enough to charge without an extension?

Thanks for your reply. I'll try seeing what's on the same circuit. Where is the charge port on the Prius? (It's on the front, I think, with the Ioniq.) I think I can get within a few week of the outlet even if I have to back close to the plug.

I'm seeing a picture in the e-brochure with the port on the right rear, opposite the gas filler. This would be the same as the 2012-15 PiP. The pictured cord looks like it has some significant length, allowing good parking freedom.

I didn't pop open the covers to verify the port when looking over one at a dealership a few days ago.

PS: The previous generation PiP had about a 20 foot cord:

It would also charge from a 15-Amp circuit. If you have a 20-Amp circuit, then you have some margin for other devices on the same circuit.

See note #21: Prius Prime FAQs

Thanks! That would be really good, assuming I go for the plug-in Prius.

are you talking pip or prime? pip does 11 miles and prime, 25. an extension cord, if properly sized is fine.
prime has a slow charge feature (8 amps) which can help on shared outlets. anything drawing a high starting amperage can blow the breaker. a couple people had trouble due to a keurig on a kitchen outlet that was on the same circuit as the garage.

for someone looking for advise and is too lazy to check his oil weekly you sure are nasty to other members... maybe you should buy a bicycle or get a bus pass so oil will no longer be a problem.. hope you need a new motor, cYa

LOL, this guy cant be this foolish in real life, no one could be..
so its Toyotas fault you don't check the oil and ran it dry and you expect an 8 year old car to be the same as it was when it was new as the manual refers to and you need someone to tell you to check fluids every 1000 miles.......yep everyone elses fault but yours.. you sound like every woman I have ever dated when it comes to cars, don't think about it until the red light comes on for a few weeks or it blows up..pathetic

Yup mine burns about a quart between 1-2 gas fillups. I drive 350 miles/week for work so the logical choice is the new model prius (like 1/4 of the employees) but between the oil consumption, engine knock and power inverter failure I don't want another Toyota.

I have a 2010 with 67K on her and she hasn't developed the dreaded oil burning issue. I change the oil every six months or roughly 4,000-4,500 miles due to severe service use. My Prius is used mostly for short trips around town with very little highway usage. Maybe 5,000 of those 67K miles were highway. I changed the oil in December, and I checked it last week, the stick said she is still full. She is due the middle of next month for her next oil change.

I'm getting the feeling that these 10K mile oil changes may be part of the problem. How are those 10K miles getting put on, around town urban driving or all highway?
