Wrong, it's designed to do that. if you leave it running and walk away outside of the smart key range for more than the alotted time (can't remmber how long now) it locks the doors and you have to use the key and manualy open the door.

Mine does it every morning when I have to wait for a fresh pot of coffe to finish brewing because I left the house late and hit the "coffe dump" at timmies.

Uhh... sorry, you're the one that's wrong. The only time the smart key system will automatically lock is if you touch the handle (or press the button on the fob) to unlock, but then do not open any door. It will re-lock itself after short while, which I believe is 30 seconds.

What Politburo was referring to, is that if the car is running ("Ready"), then neither the key fob nor the smart key buttons on the outside of the car will do anything. It will NOT lock the car.

The car will never lock when you walk out of range under standard Toyota configuration (unless you have some aftermarket mod, etc.).

Hey, I second what Ryanpl said. Definitely read the manual. Or get one if you don't have one.

I just got a Prius three days ago, and I am SO VERY glad that I had a manual. I have spent a good amount of time reading it--would have been up a creek a few times if I didn't have it. If you don't have one, it is VERY worth it to get one, even if you have to pay somewhat hefty dollars for it. I'm finding more and more things that are different about Priuses than "regular" cars. That's part of what I really like about it, but it also means that you can end up not knowing what to do, if you don't have any instructions.

so I took it to the dealer, had them check it and call Toyota (who ever that is other than them) and they confirmed that the car WILL lock the doors when left in the ready condition when the fob has been removed from the car or out of range for a period of time and that it is meant to do that and they don't need to fix anything.

they tried it on my car and five new ones on the lot, all of them did it.

This is a somewhat confusing, but concise description of the smart key operation and the things that can happen when used improperly, as was done in this case:
    Warning function
    • General
The smart key system is equipped with a warning
function to prevent problems resulting from
errors in key usage. The smart key system works
without any requirements other than having the
key in the user's possession. The user, as a
result, may become unaware of the presence or
location of the key and make errors (listed below)
that could lead to serious problems.

I went on a bike ride and loaded my bicycle on the back of my Prius 5... I must have left my keys by my bikerack on the hatchback, not thinking i was able to start my car because the keys were in close range. When i got to my destination however i could not find my keys anywhere. The car locked me out but i was surprised that the prius didn't warn me that the key wasnt around. I know in the past if my key is not close or they go out of range and my car is on the car will alarm me, but none of that happened and i was able to drive 20 miles without keys. Has anyone else had that problem.

you drove 20 miles without the fob, put it in park, left it on, got out and shut the door, and it didn't beep, and the door locked?

only question I ask is, why did you even take your keys out of your pocket anyway? that's one of the things which I liked when I got my first prius. you never have to remove your keys from your pocket.

Thank you all for your questions, I went on a bike ride with friends so i put the keys in my bike saddle, when i took the keys out of the saddle i think i put them on the hatchback ( not really sure) anyway i started my car so i know the keys were close, i usually put them in the middle console or in my pocket. Anyway the car started i backed up and left the area and drove about 7 miles to meet up with some other bicyclers, i got out of the car after locking it then realized i didn't have the keys...I have looked everywhere. I have tried to start the car thinking maybe the keys are still close but it won't allow me to and basically says that on the car display. I had to call AAA. Using my spare now.... have walked the freeway several times...no luck.

OP said the key was in his pocket and someone pushed the black button to lock the doors. If the key was in his pocket he only need to open the door as in any other time it is locked-- touch the handle and pull. What am I missing?!
