    Hello All!

First time 2017 Prius Touring owner (I'm Canadian ) I really like this car!

I thought the 17"rims were alloys but feels like there is a cover over the wheels?

If I take that off and paint it black, would that look nice?

Has anyone seen this or have examples?

    Thank you!!

    Ps - I attached an image :)

There's 5 individual silver plastic pieces. If you want to experiment with black, maybe try PlastiDip, something that can peel off later. I think to take them off you'll need to remove the wheel first, but not sure about that.

Also, before jumping in, keep in mind they're pricey, online US retailers around $24 per piece, so that times 5, for each wheel. Then times 4.

Any local dealership should be able to give you the Canadian retail price, just for comparison.

Congrats on a very nice car, btw. (y)

Yes, it's been done! Here's a post with a picture:

Plastidip sells a glossifier spray too so if you don't like the flat black in the picture above, you can go for a gloss finish.

They'd look similar to the level 5 rims from the 2010 - 2015 Prius.

I think they look just great as they are, I really don't get the popularity of all black wheels, they just look like big black lumps.

Good job we are all different I guess (y)

I concur. Maybe it stems from black steel rims with silver wheel covers, when the covers got chewed up, flung off or whatever, and owners just gave up? Once upon a time stamped-steel rims were silver, and capped with nice hub caps (aka centre caps) and chromed acorn nuts.

Ahh, no like. Sorry. It looks like something that'd fit a Hummer: black, utilitarian. In your shoes, I would just leave it stock.

I feel for fourth gen owners: Toyota has shut the door on decent looking prius rims. I don't much like the expression, but they need to give their head a shake.

I think it would look good if your car was white (black might be to dark). If I got the touring, I would experiment because the black part of the wheels actually look very good IMHO

To be fair, right after I posted (my disparaging opinion) we took our dog out for a walk, and a guy up the block was washing his car, had black spokey rims, very similar in appearance. Main difference, they were that way by design, ie: no odd lobes either side of the spoke rim junction. But similar in look.

I guess in the younger set it's more popular, still, not my cup of tea.

@Danny site looks to be teeter in the edge again, error message popping up sporadically. You should fix this jalopy, lol.

Here's the wheel with the inserts removed, painted gloss black to match the wheels, and reinserted. It costs about $20 per insert, or $400 total for the whole car...

I took the plastic inserts off of mine as well, and I constantly get compliments on the wheels. I'm not a complete fan, so I'm going to have the inserts painted gloss black and reinstalled eventually. But a lot of people here on the forum say the wheels are super ugly without the inserts. I don't totally disagree, but my experience is that bystanders don't even notice that I removed something and, more often than not, they actually think my wheels look great. Still, I can't wait to get the plastic pieces painted when I come up with an extra $400.

From the pics I've seen, I don't think the bolts and underside of the inserts are very noticeable at first, and people who don't know the car definitely won't notice.

Hello All, definitely getting some compliments on the vehicle since taking off the inserts. Some probably think I'm trying too hard but hey these are stock wheels. All in all, I think it makes the prius have the appearance of a "cool" car then your typical dorky prius.

when I told some friends I was getting a Prius, they all laughed. When I showed them the new prius (with the all black wheels) they were very impressed by the '17 prius. #MakePriusGreatAgain
