I just bought both at Radio Shack, tried them in various places, didn't seem to make a difference.

I made a little progress with the noise in the video.

Instead of using the light green wire 12V that coastaletech recommends for turning the power outlet into a continous source of power, I ran a wire directly from the battery in the back to my DC powersupply. I also change where I'm grounding it, I'm now grounding it to that metal poll that is in the middle of the dash. That seemed to make the biggest difference. There is still some noise, but it's better. I'm going to see if I can find an even better place to make the ground.

Out of curiosity, how did you determine that the touch-screen only responded to releases, rather than the actual push?

I only ask because for the 2004-2005 NAV override you have to hold in the button for a couple seconds. How would the car computer know how long you've pressed in the button if it can only detect button releases?

It's actually a function of the CAN-view. The actual touch-screen responds right away, but the CAN-view only sends the coordinates on release. According to Norm (guy who makes the CAN-view) said that this is because of menu buttons on multiple screens being in the same place. If he didn't do it that way then you could potentially hit a menu button, the CAN-view would switch screens, think that you are still pressing the screen and hit the menu button on the next screen. It's a bit more complicated then that, I went back and forth with him for awhile. It's possible he could do something else, but it's not a big priority for him since I think I'm the only one who is affected by this. I can't complain, without the CAN-view I would have no touch-screen interface to begin with!

I Have an '06 and CANView is not available yet for me, however when it is...

I have big plans to do the exact same thing you just did. I was going to make a small PC but you, you got the right idea.

    ...Please, i have some questions!

My question is i took measurements on my '06 (With NO NAV!) and found my space under the radio stack to be only 1.5" did you have to do anything or does your radio stack give you clearance? i wonder if the 06 JBL radio stack gives your more clearance?

I was thinking of doing something similar myself, but with an Intel Mac Mini so I could bootcamp it to Windows.

Although I might not have to anymore with AOpen's updated mini PC (copy/ripoff.) Hehe.

So would it be possible to have a mac running on the MFD if you do not have navigation? For example a 05 pkg 5? Is there a can-view for the non navigation ones that will have video input?

Yes, the CAN-view has the same features for both the nav and non-nav versions, including the video input. The video input was originally designed for the CAN-view to be able to use a 3rd party GPS in cars that didn't have the nav package.

Another question jkuznetz, what would be the best way to get sound from the mac mini to the prius' speakers while using the CAN-view setup?
    Thanks

Take a look at my site, Mac Prius

Basically I'm running the audio out of the mini directly into the JBL amp. I use a relay controled by the CAN-view to switch between the mini and the JBL head unit.

There are lots of other ways to do the audio, you can use an FM transmiter if you don't want to do all the wiring. The advantage of doing it my way is the audio always switches when you switch to the video input on the CAN-view.

I have been planning to do this since I saw your (jkusnetz) page, on digg and make. I even bought the mac mini before the prius with this in mind.

A couple of questions for the group. I have an`06 and plan on using the costaletech lockopick3 to get my video up to the screen. I really want the touch screen function (Awesome hack by the way). What I do not want to do is buy a can-view just for the serial interface. I know it can do a lot more but I am not interested in that right now ( maybe when I have some $$$$$ kicking around for PHEV).

So here is what I would like to know.

    1) Is there any way to Tap/sniff the actual screen connection, I am assuming it is serial, and use that signal with jkusnetz hack/software to go directly to the Kespan.
    2) Does anyone one know if it the signal is simple serial like what the Can-View gives out?
    3) Which wire/connector this is on the MFD?

Here is what I see in my mind:
-A small connector board with one or two Vampire taps and a female serial connector.
-Maybe a diode for signal blockage.
-We might be able to use one tap with common ground(?).
-All we would need to do is read the Tx signal and pass it on to the mini via jkusnetz programs.

I have access to lots of electrical components, and am very comfortable with electronics in general ( I teach basic Electronics in a local high school). I have some basic microcontroller skills, and might be able to work up some sort of intermediary interpreter if necessary. I just don’t know where to start or if I am wasting my time with false assumptions.

I sent this to CoastalETech a week ago as a project idea, no response. I wasn’t sure if I were alone in this desire. So if you are drop them a note.
