Isn't it odd how a common language fragments? Even in the same country. Where I live, just crossing the river into another state (literally only 18 miles from my home) the accents change as well as common slang words.

I'm assuming you're from Kentucky from your handle, but I have a dear ole buddy from Buffalo and now Greensboro NC. He's Jewish and from him I learnt quite a few Hebrew words in common usage over there which I've never encountered before in UK. We used to tease reach other over fender/bumper, hood/bonnet, trunk/boot etc. The list is almost endless, but know what? We do understand one another.

Regret, I haven't had the pleasure of visiting either state. Just vacations in NY city, Boston MA and Miami/Ft Lauderdale FL.

Age and medical insurance costs constrain me nowadays, so UK and western Europe is the limit of my backyard.

 

Concerning the English language, I remember the quote from My Fair Lady: "Why in America, they haven't spoken it for years."
