Has anyone looked into buying an additional charge cable? I will charge at home and work using the same cable, so I was looking to reduce the amount of time and wear and tear on one cable. I haven't called the dealer but assume people have thought of this before me... Thanks in advance.
It's less costly to buy an L2 EVSE for home and use the provided EVSE for work such as this. The Toyota cable will likely exceed this cost.
Consider an upgrade for home. Getting a Wi-Fi enabled charger can be both handy & informative. My local electricity provider offers $500 toward the installation of a 240-volt charger.
While my car hasn't arrived just yet, I'm in the market of buying a spare one too. The outlet sits inside my garage (which is used more like a storage area now) and i'd like to avoid having to open the garage door each morning to bring the cable to work and charge there before heading back home. I'm also considering installing an outlet on the outside so I won't need an additional cable.
FYI, I'm been lugging my Toyota EVSE to and from work for the last 4+ years. (That's 2000+ total charges) I haven't encountered any major issues including charging in the rain. This morning I encountered the dreaded orange rubber ring problem. It appeared dislodged and I couldn't plug in the EVSE so I got a flat head screwdriver and speared it out of there.
I've encountered that twice now with ChargePoint chargers... and just used a key to push it back in place.
Yeah, I did that at first but then I thought DW would just not plug it in if she encountered the problem. Plus there were a lot of threads of people taking it off without adverse effects. So it now sits on my desk.
I see you have the Advanced which means you will not need the Wi-fi home based charger. If you have 220 in the garage or your El Panel is in the garage and you have the spare capacity, I highly recommend a level 2 charger. It will take your Prime from empty to fully charged in 2 hours. I bought the Siemens model VC30GYRU from Amazon for 400 bucks (indoor only, 500 for the outdoor model) and it Rocks! The Chargepoint one posted above by mmmodem does not come with a cord so be sure to add that to your cart if you decide to go that model. If you don't have 220volts, then they sell level I cords on Amazon for about 290 bucks
It provides basic data such as time to charge, charging started, charging finished. One can also start and stop the charging as well as control the HVAC. It does not provide uber techy stuff so maybe I should have qualified my statement with "If you don't find a need for uber-techy data, the advanced is connected to wifi" so you won't need one of the wifi connected chargers to stop and start your charging.
During the warm months, my EVSE cable is routed under the garage door and hangs on the wall outside when not in use. I added a wood stop under the door to protect the cable.
I bought a used Leaf charger for $175 for my PIP. I leave one plugged in at my house and leave one in the car for work or anywhere I go.
Does anyone know if a different year Prius plug in cable will work. I have access to a good used one, part number G9060-47190, which is one character off from the prime part number G9060-47130.
Thanks, bisco I picked it up for $150 used. Powers up. Will try tomorrow when the Prime needs to be charged.
Update: plugged in the new (used) cord. It had power but would not charge the car. I checked the car end of the cord and compared it to the new one and the only difference is the used one had an orange gasket but the new one had no gasket. I removed the gasket and voila - works perfect! Thanks for all the help!
