Planning Ahead for an EVSE and a Charging Question

Commercial version of the Keurig. It only accepts k-cups so I'm assuming version 1.

Clipper Creek was a big help in helping to diagnose this issue. They responded within 5 minutes from first an email inquiry then a phone call to follow up. They know their equipment well and it was rather easy to watch my wife brew a cup of coffee and I kept an eye on the EVSE. Sure enough when the Keurig brewed her coffee, the red light came on.

Not according to this Electric Vehicle Charging Station Fact Sheet. We are talking 240 V, not 110.

So, apparently the EVSE (charging station) includes a device equal to a GFCI. Give the National Electric Code article number 625.22 to your electrician or inspector.

Mike Dee, how can there be 110 and 240 volt home voltage when the higher voltage is the sum of the two legs of the lower voltages? We all know that the home wiring is L1, L2, and neutral, plus a safety ground. L1 to neutral is about 120 volts, or 118 or something similar, and L2 to neutral is about the same, and L1 to L2 is about 240 or 237 or something like that.

Those voltages are nominal. Over the years, voltages have increased. My 120V outlets usually measure 130 or thereabouts. We used to call it 115 volts. So the old terms get mixed with the new ones and I don't worry about their precision.

Is that because the L2 charger has GFCI built in? If so, that's interesting since the Toyota L1 charger also has it. Anyway, you're right that it's not in the NEC for 240V. My mistake. But I think it might be good to check local codes because they are sometimes more stringent.

 

Part of the definition of an EVSE is that it has GFCI functionality. This is regardless of the voltage. With level 1 and level 2 charging, the charger is in the vehicle, and the externel thing is basically a smart power adapter. With fast DC charging (not available on the US version of the Prime), the charger is in the charging station.

 

So far my first attempt with two ferrite cores I still had the issues. Back to the drawing board.

 

You might want to put the coffee maker on it's own line conditioner and/or UPS that has a line conditioner built in. Or, for instance, a Tripp Lite Isobar that has built in noise filters. Direct plug-in models are about $26. Typically line conditioners and surge suppressor that also have noise filters are place in front of the equipment you want to protect, but I'm assuming the noise filters work both ways.

If you want to kill it altogether, you can also use an isolation transformer, but that is a rather radical (and ugly and expensive) solution. The biggest I've ever used could only handle 5 amps.
