SIRIUS Starmate Replay fits Prius like a glove...

I love that idea! I would have never thought of putting my Starmate there. I'll have to seriously think about moving mine once I get the car back from the wife.

I plan on putting it there once I get it. I've ordered it, but it hasn't arrived yet. I should fix my sig to reflect that.

 

I haven't gotten around to it but they do sell a DIN plate especially for Sirius Starmate.

That cubby hole underneath the radio is a standard DIN size where you can mount any standard DIN size equipment (another head unit or CD changer).

 

I had mine there for about the first month of having my Starmate...and I noticed it got smoking hot..alot hotter then what it does outside of there...if you look closely, you are covering up all the top vents and about 90% of the bottom vents..I have since then taken it out...

 

Thanks for the post..I too bought a Sirius StarMate and thought about placing it there, but I wanted to use that slot to place keys or the remote for the starmate, so the technician at the local Sirius dealer in Houston(CarToys) mounted it directly to the left of the rearview mirror, so it is up and away from interfering in any controls in the car. When I get a chance, I will post to this website. By the way, is there any way to get better quality of the Sirius beside just having your regular FM modulator connected to it? I heard they do not make it for the Prius..

Awesome Idea. I have a different Sirius Reciever which was places on the dash to the left of the Energy Monitor. After seeing your picture I decided to place mine in the same area, and run the cables behind the panels. [attachmentid=3908][attachmentid=3908]

To answer your question, there are two alternatives to the broadcast FM modulator. Both are compatible with the Prius.

1) "wired FM Modulator". This is actually a FM Relay/switch that uses a cable from the starmate to the FM antenna of the Prius Radio. When the starmate is on, the switch turns off the external FM antenna and directs the radio to the starmate. The starmate then "broadcasts" it's output over this cable directly into the antenna input of the Prius Radio. You tune the FM to the frequency the starmate is outputing on just like the regualar broadcast FM Modulation. With the external FM antenna disconnected there is no interfearence and the quality is excellent.

2) Direct Line Out from the Starmate to AUX IN in the Prius. This is standard in the 2006 prius in most models. This is higher quality than wired FM. You may need a Line Isolation FIlter between the Sirius Line Out and the Prius Aux IN to eliminate "noise". If you have a prius without Aux IN, I recommend an interface like the Vais to provide one. Note that these aftermarket Aux In devices currently available are expensive. They only make sense if you are using some of their other options like a full IPOD or XM interface including control and information display. If you don't need those features, then the wired FM modulator is far more cost effective and is very high quality.

With either method, you need to run the power, antenna, and either wired FM relay or Line Out cables ...

Also, did you just use trial-and-error to open up the dash and all that, or did you use someone's guide?

Trial-and-error.. .I was very slow about it, and careful and in the end it was rewarding. At night,obviously only the display of the sirius reciever can be seen, making for a very natural look.. thanks again for the idea..
btw how much is the sirius prius?

Here are the steps I took to install the Starmate in the cubbyhole The Sirius magnetic antenna was hidden under the sharkfin antenna.

I followed the installation of the Sirius antenna according to cariro94507’s instructions. Many of the pictures are similar, so I won’t bother reposting them. Attached is a step-by-step of how I routed the antenna wire.

This is a temporary installation. I plan on running the cables behind the dash when I have time to install the wired FM relay. It sure would be nice to have that Aux-In jack. <_<

Yes, the antenna that came with the Starmate fit. I was a little worried, but there's room to spare. The pdf should work now.

 

About the starmate heat generation...

I've found that since I use the Aux port at home and in my Prius, I have turned OFF the FM modulator. I don't need it if I'm using the Aux port. Much cooler operation.
