I have a 2006 prius with normal halogen headlights. Is it possible to just buy LED lights and put them in?

It's possible, but don't expect them to be very good at actually lighting the road well.

I recently installed a set LED lights into my wife's Altima. 80W each led light assembly...160W total..16,000lm total output... they are super bright compared to halogen. But still don't have the same brightness as HID. But because her assembly uses her high beam as her DRL, HID wasn't an option. LED allowed for a lower voltage allowing the DRL to function as designed and still functioned as high beam at full wattage. HID doesn't function if at all unless the correct voltage is presented so it wasn't an option.

If you were to put a similar set into a halogen or oem prius HID headlight assembly, the light scatter would be awful.. blinding oncoming traffic. Nothing beats a true HID projector retrofit to date for our Gen2...when there is... I'll upgrade.. until then...

I wonder how these aftermarket projectors are?

They use H9 65w halogen bulbs, so they should be pretty bright.

You will find several threads on those crappy eBay projectors. They look "ok" but like most mass produced projector headlights, the lack in quality and clarity of the lens as well, the engineering of the projector beam lack good focus of light pattern.

Still, the cutoffs of the projector lowbeams are better than reflector type lights.

Has anyone dropped a LED bulb into a stock halogen reflector and can comment on the beam pattern? I really want to do this to my 06 which has halogens to get some brighter output.

Yes I am aware how great some people think retrofits are. I have FX-R projectors in one of my cars and some S2000 projectors in another with 50W HID's. The problem is after spending around $1000 to retrofit both those cars I have a great sharp cutoff and even beam pattern, great light. I can't read any dam street signs at night without high beaming them. I have trouble reading overhead signs on the freeway too. The cutoff is too sharp and no light makes it up. I prefer a bit of scatter so I can actually see things in front of me not just the pavement.

3-4 months ago installed these 5th gen LUMILED H4 bulbs from aliexpress (can't post a link yet, as i am new user) 20161129_154449.jpg 20161129_165402.jpg
Bright, light up road (wet as well) perfectly. When pointing to the wall, can see curved edge. Have to say, curve is not 100% but clearly visible. Also I had to adjust position of the headlights to the 2nd (thumb wheel position).
Never had any complaints (blinking) from other drivers. But didn't go through NCT (MOT) yet.

I'm so glad to see this thread I was using a brighter halogen in my 08 Prius, but they wouldn't last long so I changed them to LED bulbs. Here is the thing I changed the housings at the same time as well. So I don't have any before pictures but here is what it looks like now. I can't get the height adjusted correctly and the pattern does seem a bit scattered. I cut up my rubber cover to make them fit and every thing I really don't know what I want to do now 20170303_213121.jpg 20170303_213134.jpg 20170305_195538_001.jpg

How does that law work? No Xenon but LED are allowed? Not even Xenon projection headlights?

Oem reflector headlamps are design around a halogen bulb, any others may not work properly! A professional Hid retrofit will produce best results. I have a set of ANZo on a dodge ram pickup they are good but don't produce a sharp clear output as a moramoto d s2 retrofit system I done on a subaru xv.
