Hi PriusChat! Completely new to PriusChat, but I'm super excited to get your feedback and whatnot. Anyways, I'm looking to take a cross-country trip across the United States starting in May. I got my '08 Prius about 2 years ago. I absolutely love it. Couldn't ask for a better car. I'm just looking for some tips and tricks that any of my fellow Prius family would be willing to share with me. Anything at all really. I look forward to hearing from you all! - PriNomad

First of all, Welcome! Sounds fun! Two pieces of advice, 1 if you're doing a lot of highway/high speed driving, check your oil level in the each morning or ever other morning. This generation tends to use oil at highway speeds, especially if it has over 150,000 miles. 2nd, make sure if you have a lot of people and or language, make sure to not block the hybrid battery vent in the back seat. Ohh and how could I forget, make sure you're tire pressure is pumped up to around 38 psi, maybe even 40 for best fuel economy! Other that, enjoy! The Prius is a fantastic road trip car, isn't it.
Thanks Aaron! I have just under 130,000 miles on it right now. And the oil is something I'm a stickler for. I actually learned how to change my own oil from this website! It was the whole reason I wanted to start my own account. Not blocking the vent is a new one for me, so thank you for that! And I'll be sure to keep up on the tire pressure!
That's great! Glad Prius chat helped ya. I usually run 40 to maybe 42 psi on road trips. The second generation Prius seems to handle better and get better mpg on the highway like that. These cars are fantastic. My sister drives my old 2005 Prius with 302k miles. She recently took it on a trip down to the South Carolina coast from Chattanooga TN. I honestly don't worry about it. It's never even had a check engine light! I just make sure to always remind her to add oil. It drinks oil like crazy! Especially since she drives about 80-85 mph! Great cars
welcome! check your spare and jack, and all the fluids. air and cabin filter. bring a piece of plywood for under the jack, in case the ground is soft, and a breaker bar for the lug wrench. have a great trip!
Nice! Thats great to here how good the '05 is still doing! It makes me even more happy to have an older generation Prius. Definitely an oldie but a goodie! I also have yet to have my check engine light come on. (Fingers crossed that is stays that way!) As far as the oil goes, I've been playing around with different oil filters. My first solo oil change, I used a FRAM, but after further research I learned that they really aren't too promising. I've been using a Bosch filter since then and I honestly noticed a big difference. Happy I switched. Still always open to new and different suggestions though, but for now the Bosch is the filter for me.
Thanks Bisco! That's actually a great idea bringing the plywood. I never would have thought to bring that along. And i'll be sure the make sure everything is all up to par before heading out and checking periodically throughout the trip! - PriNomad
