Someone from my YouTube channel posted a question about how to enable the Full Display view for the Backup Camera on the 11.6in display for the Advanced because when he test drove it at a dealership, the salesperson modified it to be Full Screen instead of the default.

So the question is how can we do it? Does anyone know?

    Thanks

I seriously doubt that a Toyota dealer would mod a brand new Prime on their lot. If this is somehow true, I would love to know how they modded the display, because that would open up a bunch of other possibilities.

    Mine defaults to full screen

Oops. Upon further examination it is only half screen and the bottom half is black.

I had convinced myself that I was imagining the full screen backup camera. About a week after buying the car I was backing up and the backup screen was only half screen and not the full screen I was expecting. It looked strange to me and I shut down and restarted the car with no effect. Google and the manual were no help so I just figured it was half screen from the start and I was losing my marbles -- until I read this thread that is....

Exactly how would you expect a horizontal camera image fit on a vertical screen in full screen mode, though?

Exactly @Toptimus. The only way I can imagine this working full screen is if the camera field-of-view was zoomed out in order to fit the vertical screen. However, this seems a little dangerous as you'd be limiting the amount of horizontal area in your view.

That's my question back to the guy who posted the question on my channel as well. Since the orientation of the screen is portrait and not landscape. I guess we will never know for sure. LOL

Sideways. And you would turn your head sideways to look at it. :ROFLMAO:

Actually the only way I could see it working is in a zoom mode, but what little value would be gained by zooming in would be countered by losing the full horizontal view.

What would be useful, is if Toyota used the bottom portion or the screen. Like showing proximity sensor data. I keep look up to the 4.2 screen to check the sensors when I am backing up. It would be nice to have it all on the same screen. It would be a purely software fix, but I don't expect Toyota to provide Tesla-like major software/feature updates.

Who needs a backup camera anyway, you just need one of these

Alternatively is if Toyota equips the Prime with the Bird's Eye Monitor on the RAV4 Limited/Hybrid Limited and soon to be on the 2018 Camry. That way it can use the bottom half with the views from the different cameras.

I can see the edge of the license plate on mine.
If it were full screen you could probably see the front bumper on top.

Does the Premium Prime also have backup radar?
When backing up, can it detect and warn of traffic approaching from both sides?

For future reference, it's called "Rear Cross Traffic Alert" and the same term is used for multiple car companies (so it's not a Toyota marketing term).

right after my prius was delivered my entune system updated, so i wonder if this update changed it to half screen from the original full screen i saw at the dealership.

The same thing happened to me! a few days after I had my prius the backup display switched to half screen! I swear it used to be full screen

I realize that it may be hard to remember, but close your eyes (after you finish reading this of course) and think back to how it looked when it was full screen.

Because the normal backup camera image is horizontal, with an aspect ratio of about 1.70, similar to widescreen TV. However the full 11.6" display is vertical with an aspect ratio of about 0.60 . So somehow it would have to fit a horizontal peg into a vertical hole. The camera doesn't zoom in or out, although in theory the display can digitally zoom. So either it zoomed in so that it can fill the display, in which case you lose information on the sides, or else it has to stretch the image. I made up examples of how each would look as shown below.

What I would like is the retention of CLIMATE CONTROLS on the screen while the camera is on. I have a VERY long driveway and, especially right now, frequently wish to turn on my A/C controls while my car is engaged in reverse. No I'm not moving, I just don't want to shift back to neutral to turn on my A/C. Hey it's hotter than the Theological Place of Eternal Punishment out here!!:):)o_O(y)

Had one of those puppies on my '69 GTV, great rearward view for daytime; overwhelming lights at night!
