Another problem in this country is that people are hooked by big discount or great finance.....and many of them are not looking on budget .......How is looking is not what drive you each day....
Resale value are another thing that makes people not consider when buying car...
Hybrid car's no matter how fuel are cheap will save much more vs Gas car's we know....
My advice is whenever you are buying a car go after one that is at least 3+ generation on the road .....Resale value over the years......Cost of maintenance and MPGe....and MPG efficiency
I can't stress enough what people need to watch when they buy next car....
Don't be lured by lifetime guarantee...by some companies....they do this just to get you buy a car that actually only cover one part of the car ..and we all know who that is in USA....
If you read fine print.....they don't cover loss of charge over the years...so you will be running with less than 60% of battery ....
Now let's talk about battery density.....more juices out of same space are not always good to the end of user that buy ....
If you looking for top density battery..be educated that this battery will need coolant to stay in check and keep long life....
What will draw power to extend life ...and will take your efficiency to convert this to mile travelled....
Buffering battery are things that companies use to keep under warranty check.....

At my work, when gas was $5. People talked about getting a fuel efficient car. Some didn't even laugh when the Prius came up. They nodded their heads! Now, with $2.50 gas, it's like you're eating pizza with knife and fork in the break room. Everyone is judging you negatively. I'm thinking it'll take $7 - $10 gasoline before I stop seeing full-size crew cab trucks driven by engineers with manicured nails wearing designer jeans with holes in them.

Seems like more than half of the vehicles around here are SUV, Honda CRV and their ilk.

For me, the price of gas means squat. I'm hooked on reducing consumption, recycling. But: so many people living on take-out, their bins crammed to overflow with great wads of superflous (and largely recyclable) packaging.

Went into Sears a while back to get a fresh pack of flannel diapers, for polishing the car (I'm not there yet, dammit...): they're not selling them anymore. The whole store looks like a discount warehouse too, riding a wave that's come-and-gone.

Wait until gas prices start rising in the near future then everyone will run to get rid of their trucks real quick Lol. For me, i see no point of owning a Truck/SUV unless your hauling around big nice person heavy stuff. I'll mess with crossovers like the RX/RAV4s since they are just cars anyway with way better MPGs than a 19 MPG truck platform.

I agree when gas goes up and it will. Either because of taxes or supply, hybrids will be popular again. And the Prius is virtually maintenance free and trouble free. I remember when gas was 4.00/ gallon and you had to pay at least MSRP for Prius

Some of you have more faith in human intelligence than I do. I remember when it was around $4 a gallon. I got passed by a Suburban going well over 100 mph ON - THE - SHOULDER. People drove like gas was free and then whined about the price. When prices go up again, I expect that on average, they'll mostly still drive like idiots and they'll resume power whining about the price of gas while doing nothing at all to reduce their expenses. Hybrid and other efficient vehicle sales will go up a little because not everyone is below average intelligence. Just my curmudgeonly observation based on what I've seen over the decades. :cautious:

Competition. There are a lot of very good and fuel efficient vehicles in the same segment as the Prius. For less $$. That and my other answer is that 'Mericans think they need to buy a big black truck or SUV.

Hey OP PHDRHP - what's with the scary looking avatar? Are you meany?

In Canada, the Camry Hybrid was the best selling hybrid until the launch of the RAV4 Hybrid. I believe now, it has overtaken the Camry. (The RAV4 is very popular here, 2nd to the Corolla in sales). I have seen more RAV4 Hybrids than Gen 4s even though the Gen 4 had 6 month lead.

Yes but also the argument has shifted from "my next car will be a hybrid" to "my next car will be an EV".

So the waiting game continues. They just keep making excuses. Ok some have legitimate reasons (fiscally, why spend money on a new car, regardless of what it is, when the current one is working well and is running well too).

I can't stand those raised mod pick ups polluting the air. They think they are bad asses and own the road. putting lift's on those things is just asking for trouble since pick ups are not designed to be that way to support all that weight which will eventually break and watch the truck fall to its life.

There should be regulations prohibiting or severely limiting these types of vehicles. They serve no logical or useful purpose. They are a danger to other drivers, tear up road surfaces and other surfacess, make unnecessary noise and pollution, and each one of them in their own small way gradually push the earths climate towards its disaster.
