    It can only go up as you tweek your driving. I have been plugging in everywhere I can and haven't used any gas for the month of February! My goal is to use none for the whole month. We will see from there! Lol.

    This is as of last Saturday. 2 1/2 months on the same tank of gas. I ended up filling up after this picture was taken. Took 9 gallons to fill up. Added fuel stabilizer to the pure gas I put in. I am interested how long this tank will last!

    I drive a lil over 30 miles to work each way n i do charge at work n home.. Right now in Ny the temps are on the colder side so my ev range is not that great. Low 20s. And i average 65mph on highway for about 20 miles. Very little trafick n i use hov lane. The car deff makes energy more efficient as it recharger battery when cruising or going down hill... At the pump i think i got close to 60-65 mpg which is double the my old sedan.

    About 236 mpg. I decide to start with a clean slate since I found a way to charge at work without using gas at all. Reset both tripometers.

    Why all the fuss about "MPG"? Given that the miles per gallon of gas depend on how much you use the EV mode, I don't think it makes a lot of difference. I love being in EV mode, but it is not like it is free, either in $ or environmental cost (electricity has to be produced, typically from fossil fuels as opposed to nuclear unfortunately). BTW, on the cost, I figure here in VA it takes about $1 to fully charge the battery (at 8c/kwh) which takes you about 25 miles vs.a gallon of gas taking you about 50 miles at $2.50. So it is only a slight cost savings to use the plug-in vs. the gas (about 25%). Let me know if I am missing something.

    Awesome and great MPG! Next time I'm also waiting until the low-gas light turns on...been filling up at the 1/4 mark. Did you happen to notice how many gallons it took to fill-up?

    Only if one plugs in the car. Driving 1,200 miles cross country, I needed to know what to expect from the 11.4 gallon tank. But I will be doing the same, no-charge, mph vs MPG that I've used with every other car. I'm just waiting on standard day temperatures.

    The engine, transmission, and tire warm-up penalty from a cold-start (i.e., over night) is a substantial penalty. It only takes about ~2 miles before the Prius goes from ~35 MPG to over 50 MPG but this warm-up penalty can be a substantial part of a daily commute. So my past experiments included block heater, transmission heater, and speculation about tire heating by inductive warming of the tire steel belt. But the EV mode is an effective short cut.

    We use EV mode to reach a speed and THEN use HV mode to start the engine. This lets the engine warm-up in a low-power mode so the minimum fuel is burned for heating. This spreads the cold-start penalty over the early part of the trip with a substantial, total energy savings.

    Now there is a hidden trick the next (or current) Gen-4 Prius could achieve by 'fill charging' the traction battery at the end of a trip. The rule would be:
    WHEN ( (fully_warmed) AND (speed < = neighbor_hood))
    {
    SET target_SOC = 70-75%
    }

    This means the engine would run more at the end of a trip, efficiently banking the EV energy needed for the next trip. It would also alleviate the need to plug-in the car. Prius Prime efficiency for not just the ordinary Prius but every hybrid model.

    There is a mirror image rule that works when the car is cold-start:

    WHEN (cold_start)
    {
    SET target_SOC = 45-50%
    IF (stopped) THEN
    Engine_OFF
    ELSE
    Run_engine_warm-up_minimum_load
    ENDIF
    }

    This lets the car use the stored charge to exit the neighborhood and achieve speed. The necessary engine warm-up burn still occurs but at the most efficient rate.
