This is exactly what I was looking for. A more simple method.

    Thank You

Even if it does nothing other than waste time?

    Eric,

So lining the cells up and daisy chaining them positive one side / negative on other will not balance cells? But if you daisy chain them and discharge and recharge then you are balancing? Just wanted to clarify.

    Thank You

Here is another expert explanation. Prolong Battery Systems FAQ - Hybrid Automotive

    Prodigy,

So don't even bother is what you're saying? Just replace the cell that is bad? unbolt from bottom and put everything back together ? Plug and play?

If I decide to charge/ discharge and balance.. What is the minimum voltage I should take the packs down to while discharging? and what is the maximum when recharging? And the easiest way to do this is keep the modules in the pack and run a wire to all the negative terminals on each module and one to all the positives?

lining up all the cells and soldering them together seems like an awful lot of work.

no, you don't have to solder them together I looped the solder around each stud because I was too lazy to strip the insulation off a long piece of wire..as I said, it was a suggestion from a shop, some of my mods were low 7 volt, some 8 volt, after doing this they were all around 7.6 volt had I have not had a problem with the pack in over a year. most of the $400 rebuilds here just replace 2 mods clean the fan and put the car back together so I thought Id try it myself for $50 and 2 hours time. maybe I got lucky

What I'm saying is that to do the job properly you need to spend a lot of time, have appropriate equipment for charging /discharging, appropriate measuring tools, and a supply of quantified modules.

Unless you have a business, most people don't have all these things. (lack of money, lack of time, lack of equipment, etc) Therefore, for the most part, what is done at home it is an incomplete job.

So no matter what you do it really is not the best. The extra time you spend doing a little of this or a little of that may not make any difference at all. Doing something and doing nothing may have the same outcome.

Either go all in and do it right (which most people will refuse to to do because of lack of time, amount of effort, or lack of money.)

Or skip all the steps and do an simply acknowledge that you are doing an incomplete job: this will save a lot of time, money, and effort. At least in the short term. Your car may not be reliable but so what?

You might get lucky and swapping in module works for a while for you.
Maybe you'll be unlucky and it does in a couple of weeks.

It's a toss up and luck is a big influence in the outcome.

Does anyone know the lowest I should go on the voltage of the packs while recharging and the highest while charging? if I decide to balance them?

Read through the the Hybrid Automotive information.
He's got some of the best info about charge/discharge process.

And if you find the info valuable, perhaps you might consider actually buying his product.

Hybrid Automotive has been a financial supporter of PriusChat for many years. Including supporting in-person PriusChat member meet ups.

I also just bought a UltraPower 120AC charger with 2x120w output. Can someone give me specs on what to set the discharge and charge rate for each cell and which cells to start with and which ones to not bother with? Or should i do each cell?

also should I remove the cells in the pack before charging or can I charge in the pack?

    # 15 is bad..change it , anything below 7.2 is junk......again you need to test these under a load not resting voltage, many people have told you to do this but if you aren't going to do it why waste everyones time??? I also told you not to charge them outside the pack as they will swell and never go back together since you clearly aren't listening Im not going to reply anymore to this post.. best of luck, don't electrocute yourself.

Dear Sir I tried to contact via private message but seems I may not have been worthy enough. I just wanted some more details on creating this bigger battery via positive and negatives looped together. so loop a conducting wire (solder is such a good idea) to all the positive contacts. and another piece to all the negatives. now do the positive as negative solders need to be connected? or will this seperate contact with each other allow them to settle voltages in each module over a day or so.

You probably won't be able to "fix" one that's super lower than the rest by reconditioning it. You maybe could trick the ECU by moving the voltage sensor wire to another (different) module, but you gotta wonder if that'll mess with something.
What do you mean by balancing? See also this for my thoughts on "just replacing one", it is possible but just might happen again :)
