$37,995 for a Plus? Really??? And I thought the charge door did not open if you did not have the fob on you. $9,000 plus for an adjustment better be one hell of an adjustment for that price.

I could see 1/2K but 9K? That buys a lot of gas or a Volt.

I will never pay anything dealership attached to the window ....
Only sticker price advertised by Toyota or less if you buying full equipped car..then they have more room for discount....
And this discount are also they get it back....how i will not discuss tax preparation and loss they claim .....

Supply and demand?. They have the only one within 300 miles, they'll ask whatever they want. Based on their approach, I won't even walk into their showroom to look at it.

Bottom line, the dealer wants to keep it.

It draws folks in. Maybe they place an order.

When a truck load of primes show up, he can take the silly charge off and sell it like normal.

Meanwhile, maybe someone will pay it.

Well, if they wanted a 'show off" car they should have got an "advanced".

Truth be told, they'll probably get their +$10K price. Oakbrook/Hinsdale/Westmont area is not known for the lower priced vehicles. You can buy a Tesla X, Maserati, Rolls or Lambo just around the corner. 40K is more of a kids toy in those parts.

That said, let's say a prospective customer came into any dealership (with tactics such as this) to look at some other car model and saw the +10K "market adjustment" on a window of any car in the showroom. What would they think about the trustworthiness of the dealer in general? I don't think many people would stick around very long to even price out anything they might be considering. It really paints the dealer in a very bad light, doesn't it?

The auto show is in town this week. This might have something to do with their "special sticker price." Don't think for a second I was considering this dealer to shop a Prime. I just wanted to see one, and in the color I think I'd like. Mission accomplished in that regard.

Totally. Then they could add $12,000 to that and make it only $47,000.

Reminds me of 2005 when I was on a waiting list. One day, I got a voice mail from the local Toyota dealer, "The car carrier just arrived and the first one with $1,000 get the Prius."

It was a time when new Prius were marked up $2-3k and they were still in short supply.

You folks are so hard on the poor dealerships.
Why, I bet if you negotiate well and sweet talk the salesman you can knock 1/2 off the market adjustment.

    j/k

Seems like an odd thing to have to do. Why not just tell a person what the price is and leave it at that? Wait, if that would happen then all those "used car salesman" jokes would lose their meaning.

If I ever get my car and am happy with the experience or even just satisfied that they tried...then I plan to slip the salesman I am working with a $100 bill on the way out and tell him to take his wife out for a nice dinner. It can't hurt if I need to bring it back for one of the many things some seem to be running into with this new car.

The plug-in owners group here is working to build a salesperson recommendation list. It's a win-win that's working well here. I suggest you do the same for your area.

So today I went to the Decatur Toyota dealer and the sales critter repeated the same nonsense about production being suspended. But when I told her about the drive from Rhode Island, I realized 'the lights are on but no one was home.'

I just signed up here but I used this site a lot to help me with my prime purchase. I bought my prime from Baxter Toyota in Nebraska. I live in Houston and I had them deliver it here. The car was coming from the Northeast so they just redirected it to Houston and charged me $650. I thought it was a small price to pay for the convenience of it showing up at my front door. The guy at Baxter was great and made the process real simple.

Welcome, ZHUprius. Sounds like they wanted to work with you. That is great. They are one of the largest, if not the largest Toyota dealer in Nebraska. If they had been more cooperative with me in the beginning, I would have gone with them. Looks now like I should have. Enjoy the ride. I am sure you are going to like it. Did the city finally get rid of all those Super Bowl people?

Thanks, I contacted a few dealerships in the southeast that had primes and they weren't very helpful or reasonable. So I think I lucked out with Baxter. My commute is 19 miles one way so I use a little gas on the way home and the prime is a great ride so far. The city has definitely quieted down but it was cool to have people care about Houston for a weekend.

I know crazy market adjustments such as this one for $9786 would happen.

Thats why I did my own market adjustment on Feb 2. Flew to Maryland for $206 one way including tax.
Blue Prime Plus with black interior
    28189 msrp
    -1000 Toyota rebate
    -730 additional dealer discount
-248 msrp All weather floor and cargo mats provided free by dealer
+130 extra for dealer processing fee over $170 documentation fee in Illinois
    +15 for Maryland temporary tag

$1627 saved over MSRP even after my plane ticket. And I got to drive thru some nice mountains in Maryland and West Virginia that I had never seen before.

Delta savings of $11413 over the crazy price of perhaps the first Prime in a dealers showroom in Illinois.

Was in Lincoln, Ne today and stopped by Baxter Toyota. They currently have 5 Prius Primes on site. All advanced. 1-red, 1-white, 3 silver. The white one and one or two of the silver have body side moldings on them. Had to look for them. They were not out front. Ended up finding them on the side and back of the dealership. For those of you in the Midwest, it is a nice drive to Lincoln. Better than flying to California. Nick Bradley is the Sales Manager in case you are interested. I'm still holding out for mine to get here in two weeks from another dealership. Was sure hard to walk away from the one I wanted right in front of me. Good luck to all.

PS- that red one sure looks sharp in the sun.
