Cooling pump when you turn your car off there's a hum if it starts to get loud on the driver's side in front of the tire I'd order one on eBay they're cheap and swap the water lines really quick and those three places in the car to put coolant but I wouldn't change that either I just get it tested it last for ever

The high mpg tires that I saw were very expensive and a special order item. I went with regular goodyear tires and I get an average of 48 mpg so thats good enough for me. I have them inflated to 40 psi.

They are often called LRR (low rolling resistance) tires. Not essential at all, but they help. Regular tires might cost you a small amount of gas, but they are also probably quieter and more comfortable. If you're getting 48 with regular tires on a Gen 2, you're doing great. Enjoy! :D

I think it is part of the learning curve, 'engine running' is not synonymous with On. Just as you have to find new ways to realize your 12 volt battery is dead, the Ugh Ugh ugh noise is absent on a Prius. (We have a lot of folks just now who do not realize their battery is dead)

This weekend I changed the front rotors and brake pads, water pump and serpentine belt. I drove to work and back and have surprising gas mileage now. I am tending not to trust this because its a lot higher than the 48 I was getting before. I feel like maybe I messed something up but I don't know what it would be. I left the inside lights on Friday night and drained the 12 v battery but I charged it Saturday and Sunday and drove the car monday to a from work. I will monitor this and see if I keep getting this mileage. All highway driving. IMG_20170206_153755.jpg

If you disconnected the 12 V (which you should have done to work on the brakes), it will have reset some engine parameters back to factory defaults. After about a month of driving they will recalibrate in line with your driving style and things will be back to normal. The OP leans toward a more economical style (it would seem), and so the tuning will lean toward that.

That's true. That's what makes his new numbers look so amazing. You'd think economy would take a hit until the ECUs retrain themselves and gradually get better as they sort things out.

It could also be that the family member from whom he inherited the car drove with less than an economical leanings and the engine settings were tune accordingly. Now it is a blank canvas. The OP has leanings toward a more economical style (so it would seem), and the engine will tune towards that accordingly.

That sounds like a interesting idea. I bought a used prius some month ago. Maybe its benifital to reset the ecu. How long time so i need to keep the 12v off?

    Skickat från min SM-N9005 ?

I had the battery disconnected for two days while I recharged it after accidentally leaving inside cabin lights on Friday night, so everything was definitely reset. I will see how the average looks at the end of this week. I have been driving like a grandma though.

I wouldn't bother with resetting ECUs. They do learn a little about your habits, but mostly they are figuring out the details of your specific engine in order to optimize efficiency.

You only need to disconnect it for a short time, 30 sec to 1 minute will do it.
And yet some people report a marked change when they pick up their cars from the shop.

There is no harm in doing it, so why not. At least if you get bad MPG, you know who to blame. (y)

No harm at all. But if I lived in a state that did emissions testing, I don't think I'd do that right before a test. ;)

    Commander Obvious say's:
Since you are starting from a buy in price of "Free", you have the rare luxury of any investment into the vehicle itself, starting the investment meter from cost point 0.
You seem well aware of the vehicles problems and either have fixed them or have plans to fix them.

So I don't have too much advice, other than enjoy the vehicle.
And I personally value attention to issues that can be safety related. IE: Brakes, Suspension, Tires.

It is an 11 model year old Prius. You might discover several problems with time. But good luck.
I hope it just keeps running great.
