How much weight can a prius tow in a trailer?

    You piqued my interest, lol. My guesstimate: you were still more-or-less legal. Close though, and it's concentrate load toward the back.

    Yeah...I guess my point more than anything is the rear end sank down to the point the rear fenders almost hit the tires..so having a trailer hitch ..you would have to watch the weight load as well as the ability to control a full stop with that much pressure on the rear end...

    Yes. My real concern for towing is not the couple hundred lbs tongue weight, nor the longer stopping distance, but the ton of weight behind me, wagging the dog!

    Use a weight distribution hitch and a trailer with brakes and you can likely safely tow anything.



    Whether you will overheat, burnout something or crash has as much to do with the cars capabilities as it has to do with your own common sense and ability to know your vehicles limits.

    I've had 1200lbs of l16s in the back of my volt, ran fine on the bumps stops drove nice and slow, car survived doing it twice only about 120 miles.
