Is there a block heater option for us in the north?

Call the dealer, they can get one. Part is $50.

Can you be a bit more specific: Alaska, Canada, Finland, Siberia? Assuming Canada: here's the installed price:

2016 Prius Accessories - Toyota Canada

$322 is a jump, last year it was around $235, better deal. The part up here is somewhere around $80~90, but install is not trivial. Especially if you're doing this in conjunction with purchase, it'd be easier to get it installed, and maybe you can negotiate the cost as part of the package.

Two hours usage is good. We use ours year round, right through summer, almost without fail, for the first start up of the day. Run the plug out through the lower grill, double zip-tie it, short enough that it won't drag on the road, and plug into an extension cord that can pull out easily, and is secured so that you don't end up dragging it down the street. Sooner or later you will forget to unplug, lol.

Has anyone used one on a gen 4 yet?
With the faster ICE warm up they have, is it still worthwhile? I looked for the hole described on older ones and did not find it. I understand it is not visible and must be felt.

Sorry - part is $50 in Minnesota. Install is expensive. I usually do these myself, so I don't pay for install.

I called a Toyota dealership in Alaska. They gave me a part number but I think it's a Canadian part number. It's C014000913.

If my local dealership can't get this part I'll call one in Minnesota.

Be careful about the Gen 4 grill shutters, though. You do not want to obstruct their operation.

I could not order the part number that I got from the Alaskan dealership locally so I called all three dealerships in Minnesota. The dealership in Burnsville was the most helpful. They claimed that they called Toyota Corporate and Toyota said the same part number for the 2015 Prius works for the 2016-2017 Prius. The part number is PU140-00913. I'm going to send an email to Toyota Corp myself. I need this information in writing so that I don't void my warranty.

A friend ordered a PU-140-0900 for me for Christmas, which an on-line chart said was correct for my Gen 2 2005. However, I received a p/n PU140-00913. After a couple weeks of trying to get this straightened out, I finally appealed to the ultimate authority (Danny) and he found:

"Good news: it's the same part. Anything with a number lower than 913 is an obsolete number. Toyota periodically updates the number. 913 is the most current and fits all applications. It is the only style of block heater currently carried by Toyota and is applicable across all of their cars."

Incidentally, the PriusChat Shop has the best price I've found on this thing.

Right now, the Prius Chat Shop still differentiates the product among several models, but no matter what you order, you get the -00913 part, which Toyota says applies to all Toyota models.

Gen 4 heats up really fast with the catalytic converter coolant loop. Are you guys purchasing a block heater because you have sub 0F temps? Should still turn on fine..

Guys, looking for install info for the 4th gen. Our Drive $mart Wisconsin group mechanics have installed over 100 EBH's in all years of the Prius and they have a problem with the 4th gen install. The engine port has several rigid lines near the entry point and the can get the EBH in but cannot snap it in place.

We get our EBH's from Jesse at Metro out of Cleveland and paid about $40 for our units...we sell them for $50 so our D$W group makes some money for community outreach efforts. We recommend EBH's n any Prius for the above reasons and it should be used year round for max mpg. Without my EBH installed yet, my lifetime at 2500 miles is 91.1 mpg and I don't want to lose the typical 10-15% loss due to cold weather.

So, anyone install in a 4th gen yet and what is the secret for proper install or anyone know a Canadian dealer that can assist in instructions?

One thing I do know. The Gen 4 has active grill shutters. do not route the cable through the shutters. One poor user in Alaska already has his Gen 4 catch fire, likely due to the dealer routing the cable through the shutters.

I thought there is a spot on the engine block designed to mount the EBH with a single screw. I have not looked at the place on mine since we do not need them down south.

If the dealer can sell these things for $50, Toyota probably pays under $30 for them. They really should be a factory-installed item.

Why would Virginia and south need them?

I spent a very unenjoyable few days in the Florida Keys a while back when the temperature dropped into the low 40s.

    Why not? Anyway:

@BJFons is looking for install info, not debate regarding the need for 'em, lol.
