Correct tonneau cover?

    Hi All,

    Looking for some assistance. Can anybody confirm that this is the correct tonneau cover for a 2016 Prius?

    I think it depends on where you live - TOYOTA had at least 2 types.

    There are 2 types in the US, depending on Trim level. My base level Two came with a cover.

    I am trying to find out if I have the correct tonneau for a 2016 Prius.

    For those of you that have the tonneau, can you confirm the following:

    1. See second pic for a pic of my finger showing how wide the gap is. Does the tonneau have this gap, when fully extended, between the side of the trunk and the screen? Seems odd.

    2. See 3rd and 5th picture. Is this how your tonneau slides into the notch to hold the screen at full extension? This also doesn't seem right.

    3. See 4th picture. When fully extended, is the last part of the tonneau (closest to the hatch) supposed to lay downward at an angle?

    I have a feeling this isn't the correct tonneau for a 2016 Prius but I need somebody who has one to confirm.

    Mine is the same as your pictures, 1" gap either side, hooks into the slots at the sides the same and the rear flap bends down when in place.

    Thanks for confirming.

    That is so weird. It seems like a poor implementation in my opinion.

    The screen should reach all the way to the edges of the trunk; the hooking mechanism should be more lock-and-key like; the rear flap should extend flat, instead of bending downward.

    Just my 2 cents. I can't exactly recall what the setup was like on my previous Gen 2's but I thought it was better than this. Maybe somebody can refresh my memory.

    What are everybody else's thoughts?

    The Gen 4 Trim Two cover is a totally different flexible cover. What Trim level do you have?
    The Gen 4 cover varies depending on trim level.

    Yeah I am fully aware that the Gen 4 cover depends on trim level.

    I have the trim associated with the flexible all black cover (Trim 3); I purchased the pull out "hard" tonneau cover (pics above) separately.

    Are the trunk dimensions of the trim 2/3 different from the trim 4 such that trim 4 cars with the tonneau wouldn't have the gap shown in picture 2 above? Or is this really just how the tonneau was designed?

    Looks about right. The Gen 3 has gaps on either side but the idea is that you can't see inside because of the pillars (same as the Gen 2 but my memory of it was that it was closer to the sides than the Gen 3). It's the gap between the rear seat and the tonneau cover bar that is the largest and can actually reveal the contents of the cargo area (if someone has a flashlight and shines in).

    Also, the bending of the last bit of the tonneau cover isn't new. Some cars do that (like the Volvo C30).

    It's as good as it gets - I imagine it has to have gaps for clearance otherwise it could be quite difficult to pull out.

    It cover bends downward to somewhat block the lower window on the hatch.

    In a hatchback I had a few years ago, I used a piece of carpet to
    1. Hide the contents
    2. Stop the contents from reflecting in the rear window, hindering rear view mirror use.

    Checked mine (3rd gen), the clearance down the sides is around 1.5", about the same.

    (The angle is a bit deceptive with the ruler: viewed straight-on it's about 1.5".)

    Oh more details, please. I thought I had read you can't buy just the tonneau cover there were other parts involved. How much "better" is this cover vs the flexible fabric one I have? What do you see are the advantages and disadvantages of this one?

    For the life of me I cannot figure out how the bendy/flexy tent pole like thing I have is supposed to go back in the bag. When I initially took it out it sprang open so I don't know how it was folded originally and every way I've done it doesn't seem right. I typically remove it when I'm doing something like hauling cardboard for recycling, but I just lay it on the hood of the other car in the garage. if I ever needed to move it while out and about I'm not sure what I'd do with it.

    I think yours is the same as my Trim Two. There is a diagram (on the bag,i think) showing how to twist it to fold up. I have done it once, but it is usually just easier to put it somewhere else when removed.

    Sounds like the fold-up style is not that hot? Difficult to deal with, ends up being left off the car?

    Mine is almost always on. I only remove it when I'm carrying something larger than what I can fit beneath it which is rare. Objects in my life mostly seem to be either small enough to fit in the back under that shade or so big/dirty I'm using the truck so YMMV

    It's OK when in use. It has a wire frame around the edge. They expect you to twist to fold it like some folding sunshades.
