Weird question, does the car stop you from putting it into drive if you are still plugged into the charger? Is there any mechanism that prevents you from doing this or does it just simply warn you via a message that it is plugged in and to not drive away.

Oooo... good question! I'll add "or shifting into reverse." Looking forward to hearing the answers.

Yes, you will NOT be able to start the car if the charging cable is connected to the car.

I think you can get a response from the power button:

    ■While charging
When the power switch is turned to ON mode and the energy monitor displays,
the charging connector is displayed on the energy monitor and the flow
of electricity during charging is displayed (→P. 208). Also, when the charging
    connector is locked, is displayed.*
*: Vehicles with smart lid & connector locking system only

    However:

When the charging cable is connected to the vehicle
Do not operate the shift lever.
In the unlikely event that the charging cable has been damaged, the shift
position may change from P to another position and the vehicle could move,
    possibly leading to an accident.

What this tells me is that the car won't go into ready mode or shift out of park when you have a *working* cable connected.

I am pretty sure I tried moving the car while charging. It will not let me. The last part about possible damaged cable confirms this. If the cable is damaged and not working properly, then it is possible to move the car. But if the cable is working, you should not be able to move it.

This morning I opened the car door to put some things in before unplugging and saw a big message on the display that said that the charging port door was open. I didn't try to start the car or drive.

This car will not allow you to make a mistake. Does it do dishes?

The car is likely using the communication signal from the EVSE to see if a plug is actually in place. I guess it would be possible for that smaller gauge line to break within the cord without visible exterior damage.

if it allowed you to drive off with the cable connected, i'd be on my tenth cable by now. too bad the gas pump hose isn't similar.

Well, you shouldn't be leaving a gas pump unattended while filling it.

It's not the com pilot from the EVSE but rather the Proximity Pilot between the connector (plug) and the car inlet. Signal from the EVSE is no good as it can be in shut-off status.
The car charger management can distinguish by the Proximity Pilot between the three: properly connected plug, latch lever pressed and plug disconnected. This is part of the SAE J1772 protocol.

While charging my car I turned my car on to try and set a few things on my dash. I started like I do normally but the steering wheel is disabled and the car is not drivable (not that I tried but I noticed the steering wheel was disabled which prompted me to try the shifter). Can't do it!

You can use the Accessory mode, but you will not be able to put in READY to drive while plugged in.

It doesn't do the dishes, but it will parallel park the car for you. Didn't know that before I bought mine, & it was a little freaky the first time I tried it.

And back-in park as well. Also help you get out of a parallel parking place, although I don't see much challenge there.

Anybody know if it will back-in park other than between two cars (i.e., between a car and an empty space, or between two empty spaces)?

I also wonder if it'll work with Austin's wacky "back in angled parking":
I got a ticket once for, never having heard of this kind of parking, nosing into it from the other side of the road.

Nope. I tried that when I first got mine. It's looking at bumper height to find something to park in between. It won't park between two empty spaces.

Thanks. I recall them saying that it doesn't help park next to a wall either. (That was in the "fine print" of one of Toyota's videos.)
