I'm sure Toyota will indeed make it right, however it might be in the form of an official recall as usual. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I had a similar problem of leaking water in my Camry Hybrid right after we purchased it. We found water in the back seat floor and around the edges of the front. The vehicle was really soaked inside. Took it to a dealer, they tried to fix it, sent it home with us and said it was good to go. Next rain same problem only worse. Took it to a second dealer who was incensed by the first dealership messing this up, called Toyota for us who billed the other dealer for the labor to repair the vehicle and completely replaced all soft materials in the entire car. The car was never 100% what it should have been but it was at least in very good shape after they finished. Come to find out they had failed to drill out the water drains for the moonroof properly so water was backing up in the drain channel until it had now where to go but into the car.

Toyota 100% stood behind the work and made us happy with the repair, the dealership were hit or miss.

 

this is a very good point. with the manufacturing struggles on the carbon fibre hatch and double bubble window, this could turn out to be way more than a one off.

 

We've only heard of one, though.

I have noticed that the rear hatch gets water under it which is a little unusual in my past experience with hatches. After a rain if I lift the hatch there is a lot of water on the plastics toward the inside of the car. The real problem with this is that as things freeze it will expand and push up on the door breaking the seal along the back. I am keeping an eye on it to see how things go after a few months of winter, although for some silly reason we aren't as cold as I would expect yet, raining in January..really? This could be a flaw in the channeling systems for the vehicle to move water away from areas where it could pool and infiltrate the vehicle.

For folks in wet weather it may be good to keep an eye around the rear hatch to see if you notice anything that seems off. Having not owned a Prius before, I can't really speak to how Toyota makes its hatches and how water pools around them normally. The only Prius I have used was a rental, and it was dead of winter in Utah so I only had to deal with the 8 inches of snow (and no snow brush) but not rain.

 

the gen 3 hatch channels all the water dripping off the hatch door into the top and side, running out onto the bumper, if everything is working properly.
that's not to say you won't get a few drips on your head as you open it in the rain and lean in.

 

If it is a flaw in design would not more people with Primes be complaining about this?

 

thus, the "delay" in Japan could have found the issue and corrected it before too many got out in the field.

 

it might not be a design flaw. they were having trouble in assembly and probably had to find the right technique. like the tesla gull wing doors, these fancy designs take time to perfect.

 

Many Toyotas are made in the USA.

One of our early Accords had a windshield leak. They had to pull it off and reseal.

One thing: look the car over VERY carefully when you get it back, looking for signs of previous bodywork, over-spray, left-on masking tape, gritty compound in corners and crevises. Just being devil's advocate:

Cars do get damaged in shipping, and dealerships word bills of sale so that they don't need to disclose anything but MAJOR damage. When you start noticing "odd" stuff, it could be local body shop error, from a bodywork repair on your new car.

In BC for example, standard Bill of Sale states the car can sustain up to 20% of retail value before they need to disclose there's been any repairs.

Ask the Service Manager too. Something might have happened to the car before they took posession of it. They can research it's history, and go to bat for you if this was the case.

 

i know, and it looks like japan is catching up to us in quality not.

 

Issues like this will happen with any mass produced item. Especially as complicated as a car.
One of these issues doesn't say anything about a company. How often they happen, and how the company or its representatives address the issues are what matters.
