Anyone have their car broken into or stolen? I just saw the article from nicb revisiting the "mystery device" and was able to drive away 19 of 35 cars tested. Then I saw a Chinese segment showing people with smart keys are vulnerable too. Anyone here have any issues or concerns?

Haha. True. What do people do with stolen cars anyway? Joy ride? Change vin and sell?

A while ago, police reported the following:

Talk about something standing out like a sore thumb!!!

With almost no Gen 4 PRIUS on the road (never seen one), I think it would stand out like a sore thumb too.

A significant number are parted out. Some are put into shipping containers and smuggled overseas.

A very few have even turned up on the job at certain Mexican police agencies, still with their original American license plate.

So... In 10 years someone might steal my car and sell the battery to you for cheap, assuming I drive less miles.

Already happened in some California community, a few years back. Well, they weren't stealing whole cars, just the batteries.

In EU nobody would steal a Gen 4 or Gen 3 Prius - there are so few of them around, compared to more attractive cars for burglars for spare parts (see e.g. Golf, BMW3, etc), that nobody really cares about a car they usually don't even recognize which model/brand it is in the first place.
I am also not aware of Yaris and Auris Hybrid models being stolen (and there are quite a few more of them around in EU).

That was before Gen4 was released.

    Who steals cars?

    1) Kids wanting a joy ride. They are going to choose some thing wilder than a Prius.

    2) Chop shops wanting parts. Since Prius owners tend to be sensible drivers with money, they will not drive up much chop shop business. Except in Sacramento.

    3) Midnight exporters. It is not clear to me how they expect to start a stolen Prius in Timbuktu. Toyota makes it difficult to leave your fob in the car.

I think one Gen 3 was stolen .. so they made the Gen 4 less attractive.

i wonder if moving the battery under the seat makes it harder to steal?

Gen 4 is under the hood. This is, presumably, a Gen 4 thread.

...in Cali people were stealing Gen3 Hybrid Batteries from the back hatch, and cat converters.
I suspect Gen4 does have better protection against battery theft. It would mainly be the Level 2 with NiMH that might get stolen, as we now know the NiMH batteries cells are apparently interchangeable with Gen2 and Gen3 (which are the ones going bad mainly Gen2)
