Perhaps this topic has been discussed...but I'm wondering if anyone's doing a special Prius wavw (honk, light flash, etc.) when the pass another Prius? I feel like acknowledging my kindred spirits on the road. I was chatting with another owner at the gym and brought this up. He said he doesn't wave but gets "knowing looks." Anyone have any ideas? We can't let Harley riders have all the cool fun. B)

I still feel it, after 11 months. But I don't want to be the dork, by waving. Maybe I should pretend to be the new owner, by waving like crazy. No one would know. Maybe I will do that tomorrow and see what the response is.
During the 60s I drove sports cars, MGs, Austin Healeys, etc. (I could never afford a Porsche or a Jaguar) and we always waved to each other. Except Corvette drivers who usually didn't wave back because they didn't know enough. I have been waving to Priuses (prii) since I got mine and it seems fewer than 1 out of 10 wave back. I plan to keep trying though.
Haven't gotten any Prius owners to wave back to me yet... but last week an Insight driver initiated a wave to me!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Linny @ Jun 14 2006, 07:57 PM) </div> I got high beamed in the day time on the freeway from another prius coming in the opposite direction. We were both in the fast lane. It took me a while to process why the driver high beamed me, but then figured it out.
Dumb question- are you waving your hand inside or outside the car (I know, who would drop their MPG by putting their hand out the window?) If you are waving from inside the car, sometimes it isn't readily visible to a driver coming the other way.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(tumbleweed @ Jun 14 2006, 09:20 PM) </div> Same here. I have 74 Triumph TR6 and get 100% return wave from any Classic Brit Marque (even MG's). I have a MINI Cooper also and get about 50% waveback and 50% spaced out expression. Unfortunately Prii seem to be near 100% spaced out face. Must be concentrating on the MFD. Too bad really. You'd think this is one car that would have the comraderie. Maybe in 30 years.....
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Lola'05 @ Jun 14 2006, 08:09 PM) </div> My previous car was a yellow VW Beetle. Other Beetle owners almost always waved. I haven't had a Prius wave yet.
My wife and I are wavers. We probably get about 40% wave-back. We sometimes forget and wave to another Prius when we aren't in ours (rare, but it happens). We don't get any wave-backs then.
I used to wave, but never really got a response. Now I try to nod a greeting, and usually get a nod in return...almost 50% of the time at least
My Prius is due in about 4 weeks. If you're driving through East Tennessee, I'll be the one waving like hell!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Redblue88 @ Jun 15 2006, 02:20 PM) </div> Hey same here! So I gave up.
My other cars are a 1957 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe and a 1994 Porsche 968 Coupe. I always get waves with the 57 Chevy. The Porsche owners simply flash their lights - I recommend we proud Prius owners do the same (yeah, I love the Prius the most right now). I have had the car about a month and have only seen about 10 other Prius's so far. FLASH YOUR GREETING. If you live in the Harrisburg, Pa area, look for a White 2006 with side mouldings and red pinstripes, sans the wheel beauty rings. Don in Hershey, Pa
I tried waving when I first got my Prius, a Salsa Red 2005, but driving around Santa Monica there are so many I couldn't keep up with them all. It sucks that you don't get free metered parking in SM like you do in the rest of LA, but I guess SM figured the car would be so popular here, it would present a major loss of revenue for the city. There are 5 parked on P2 of my office building every day - it seems companies help their employees buy them, then reserve spaces for them together. The parking guys LOVE us - we're not killing them with our fumes while they are trapped in those garages 8 hours a day. There were 3 of us in a row driving eastbound on Hwy 10 the other day. So many in Whole Foods parking lots all over town that you can't even count them. Some people get bummed out about seeing so many now, but I keep checking the Toyota website to see how many millions of gallons of gas Prius owners have saved and it makes me feel great! Check it out if you haven't seen it.
I get waves from other Subaru drivers when I drive my 6 year old Impreza, but never in the Prius. When I pass most Prius drivers, they are always looking straight ahead, and don't even look over, so a wave would be lost on them. I don't know if they're too wrapped up in Prius-induced nirvana, or what. Maybe the other Subaru drivers are more into their cars, and always checking out each other driver's rides. Straight ahead!
I get more thumbs up from people in non hybrid cars/SUV than waves from hybrids. But I have only seen about 5 Prius around here and 2 Insights. I guess they give me the thumbs up because of my license plate. It says "BOO GAS".
I try to wave, and have had more returned waves recently. In my daily commute I used to wave to all the Prii, and slowly people started to return the wave, then it has gotten so bad that if I forget to initiate it, or if I am spaced out, they wave first haha. So-cal it's too difficult- they are everywhere, and that is a lot of waving! And yes, they seem to just be looking str8 ahead- it kind of ruins the "special" feeling I have with the Prius.
a couple days ago i mustered up the nerve to initiate my first wave. it helped that the driver of the black prius next to me was already looking at my prius. he amiably waved back. i'll keep on waving. it's good to feel silly sometimes. maybe i'll even start waving like a mad woman to everyone.
I wave when we make eye contact; a lot of Prius drivers around here seem almost annoyed that another Prius is around them. They act as if they can't get away fast enough. Others are very amiable and we wave to each other. While a female friend was in the car with me and another Prius owner and I waved to each other she was like 'oh my god, you wave to each other too?' That was too funny; you should have seen the look on her face when I told her that she had to wave with me.
