    Yea, just use higher octane and fuel treatment in cold weather. That helps the knock issue. I still have original 2011 manifold with 100k miles. The changes for the TSB have not helped the problem. From what I have read. So I have encountered the knock 4 times so far.

    Had this for the first time today, had to restart the car twice for normal operation. 2011 with 157k

    Think Toyota will goodwill repair it even though I'm over the 150k in MA? I'm a BMW guy and it's not uncommon for them to bend the rules in these situations if you're close.

    i wouldn't be surprised, give them a call. did you happen to shut the car down previously, while it was still warming up?

    Yeah but what can they do? Has Toyota even resolved what's happening? I've read they were replacing intake manifolds, but not effective?

    As in most cases in life: it's about time and money( or effort in this case).

    If you have the time to call and talk to Toyota, potentially get the run around, and not get frustrated if they say no, worth the effort. Best outcome is they get you an intake manifold, but that's best case with an unsure timetable to get that commitment.

    You could also go to a salvage yard and get the same part, and be relatively low cost.

    But I believe the difference between the 2 manifolds was volumetric and no real design change. This change should lead to less condensation, but does not address the root cause.

    IMO the best thing to do: if the engine starts up, let it complete its warmup cycle. This is more important and the winter. Another system health check could be to pull the egr pipe off and investigate the level of carbon deposits present. This will tell you what next steps might need to be.

    Thanks for the info guys. @bisco, I may have, I don't really remember the last trip. So far today I made a bunch of trips, no issues. It has warmed up though a lot since this morning/yesterday. Even the new manifold is 200$ msrp and I could just slap it on but it seems like that's not the fix.

    I'll keep you guys posted if it happens again.

    ray has it right.^^^ most people encounter the problem on the start up after they have moved the car around the yard and shut it down after a few seconds of the engine running.

    I did just that, when they released the first "Cure" (I believe there has been more than one I.M. redesign)......."Cured" nothing :mad:

    Apologies but what does the engine knocking sound like?

    I have a sound at start up occasionally where there's some type of fluttering sound - almost as if something is a bit loose in the engine. BUT it is faint, not very loud. brrrrr

    I do live in the snow in the winters.

    The sound will definitely get your attention. Mine sounds like it broke a rod or something serious. Thanks to this thread I knew it wasn't just me! Letting up complete the warm-up cycle has helped tremendously

    Anyone think running an update on the ecu with Techstream is worth a shot? This hasn't happened again but my ecu module is calling for an update in techstream. But it's 55$ for the subscription that includes the update file.

    This just happened to me for the first time this morning. 88K miles. Wow. If I hadn't read about this, I would have thought the engine was about to explode from the noise. I had my block heater on overnight, so the engine wasn't stone cold. I didn't drive it much over the weekend.

    I turned it off, waited about a minute and started it again. Noise didn't reoccur. No check engine light. It ran fine on my work commute.

    i wonder if build upon the intake manifold can exacerbate the problem.

    How many hours? I aim for 2 hours, anything over three hours I get nervous, disconnect for a while.
