Guys, thanks again for your input.....I drove it for a while today and noticed that:

1- the engine never shuts off now.

2- the battery icon shows that it's always charged to the max, never being used.

That said I was shopping it to dealers to see who would give me the best deal on a trade. I ended up with a 2012 Prius III w/ 45k miles for $12,900 and they gave me $1,500 on the trade. I feel pretty good about it, the 05 served me well for 8 years and was beat up pretty bad. The new car is in excellent shape with some new bells and whistles and had a solid service history. Hope this one takes me to 162,000 miles as well!

    Cheers,

    Chris

We are addressing any "issue" that is intermittent and doesn't have an obvious cause.
But it's a moot point now since the got rid of the car.

Towards the end the issues were always happening- looked like the batteries (always) stayed fully charged but the engine never seemed to shut off....an issue with the electric motor maybe? I noticed a gnarly squeaking sound from the engine compartment when I started it up without driving for a day....

You probably had the HV battery going bad......or maybe a control computer.
One parameter reported a full battery.......but another one said that then engine still needed to run to charge it more.
I think that is a fairly common indication of the HV battery failing.
