This is mostly for @GasperG and @pakitt who are often my 'go to' sources about the Prius in Europe. Understand that as an owner of both a BMW i3-REx and soon to pickup, Prius Prime (Prius PHV in EU), I'm in the rabid 'fan-boy' club. So I'm not a good observer but I get the impression, in the USA the Prius Prime are selling about as fast as they roll off the truck. @DianneWhitmire may have more insights to temper my exuberance. My question, how are things going with the 'Prius PHV' in Europe?

To me, the Prius PHV has a lot going for it:
    • +35 km EV - this should solve the City ban on all but electric cars
    • +880 km gas range - this is an excellent cross country car that can carry 'affordable' gas across borders
    • reasonable size - not a road hog, nicely sized for EU families and roads, right-sized for empty nester couples
So have any of the EU fans of the IONIQ even noticed the Prius PHV?

    Are there any sales metrics?

Prime is not yet available in EU, only few countries (Netherlands, Finland, Germany) posted their price lists and they are well over €35k with taxes, the word is it will not be available before spring.

On the other hand Toyota hybrid sales are soaring in EU:

Latest hot seller is C-HR, next in line will probably be Yaris and then Auris. I hope they also bring new Camry to EU and replace Avensis, but then again Europe would need estate version of the Camry.

You are in for a treat. I've only had a 15-20 minute test drive, a short, ~20 km urban drive. The Gen-4 Prius is a fine ride but the Prius PHV (Prius Prime) seems quieter and feels solid. It is not a pocket-rocket like the BMW i3-REx but it has a quiet competence that makes me look forward to a long distance trip.

Meanwhile, the USA is still waiting for Godot and the IONIQ.

According to the Toyota Netherlands website price list here the PiP will cost almost 8000 Euro more than a regular GEN 4 Prius, or a whopping *12000* Euro more, if we consider the 4000 Euro discount offered on Prius these days.

If we add to the too high price tag the not-for-all-tastes design, the four seats, and the reduced trunk room... well personally I like a lot the Prime, but honestly it is difficult at this time to forecast a sales hit, at least in my country (Italy) were the success of the Toyota CH-R vs the flop of GEN 4, which has the same hybrid powertrain, demonstrates that customers prefer a beautiful design to better fuel economies.

The price comparison is not really fair. You cannot compare the Prius PHV with the lowest trim level of the Prius Gen4. You should compare it with the highest trim level that costs €36.820. The Prius PHV costs €37.945 (only 1 trim level, with an optional luxury pack for €1500). The PHV does not have standard leather upholstery the Prius Gen 4 highest trim level does have it. But the PHV has the heat pump and matrix head lights. My ordered car is scheduled for delivery for start of April 2017.

    Many congrats for you order!
You are right, the comparison is not fair, because I understand that between the Priuses sold in Netherlands and in Italy there are meaning differences, in terms of price and equipment: here the Prius highest trim level (Style) has a 30950 Euro price tag, but misses the leather upholstery (a 1250 € optional).

Let's see what will be the PHV price tag in Italy, surely if the difference between the two cars prices is going to be of 1125 Euro only, the PHV is an obvious choice.

Price policy can differ per country, also the trim levels can be completely different. You can get leather upholstery as a dealer option. I'm a little disappointed that it is not part of the Luxury pack, I guess as a factory option it can be much cheaper than as a dealer option.

When I ordered my 2010 Gen 3 Prius, the leather upholstery was available only on the top trim, while I was going for the intermediate trim. Afterwards, during a trip in US I bought a set of Clazzio upholstery. After seven years, I have to say that the Clazzios look much better than my 2010 Lexus RX450h premium leather seats.... It is lkely that I do the same with the PHV, should I decide to buy it.

are there any government incentives there? we get $4,500. federal, plus any state incentive available. prime plus (base model here) is 28k - 1k toyota rebate and 6k tax credit = 21k, same as i paid for my base model '08 lift back.

    Perhaps this table will help:
USA trim starting MSRP starting EU MSRP EU options
    1 Plus $27100 ? ?
    2 Premium $28800 ? ?
    3 Advanced $33100 ? ?

i like to include transportation, since it's on the monroney and basically non negotiable.

In the Netherlands you pay less 'car tax (BPM)' and we pay half price for the road tax. If you have a business you can get some tax reduction but that is all rather complicated. It is not as simple as in the US where you get a tax return depending on the battery capacity (as far as I understood from all the messages in the forum).

In Germany, 3000 Euro refund on the list price w/o options, 50/50 Toyota/state.

    Let's hope customers prefer both.
GEN 4 is not a flop, is a niche vehicle trapped under (very) good Auris HSD sales in Europe. And Auris Touring Sports surely make a good alternative, with a big luggage volume.
If there weren't Aurises HSD, GEN 4 would sell as good as the GEN 3 back in 2009/2010.

C-HR sucess is with the HSD, because the 1.2T is not selling that much.

Well there are some issues with the table

    1. There is no standardized EU price. Each country sets its own price (see my thread)
    2. The US' MSRP does NOT include taxes or fees. The European prices include taxes (which are high).

What I was hoping to see was matching of what we call 'trim' to the packages sold in the EU. But I was not aware of their pricing including all the rest of purchasing overhead. Thanks!

Hi - I have "pre-ordered" my PHV as well and it should arrive as soon as we get the first cars to Finland i.e. March/April - most probably April. My understanding is that in EU area there are two trims available (it seems the same in all countries where information available + Toyota Europe site Prius Plug-In Hybrid | Specifications | Toyota Europe.

I probably will not take the solar roof option since in that trim level you can not get premium package (like JBL Audio, some safety features, automated parking and nice leather two color leather interior). The price difference in Finland compared to equal trim level in Gen4 Prius (what I am currently driving as a "waiting car for PHV") is roughly 5000 EUR.

From techie point of view I certainly would like to have solar roof - practically it does not have any meaning for my usage since my car will be most of the time in Garage (both home and work). It looks cool though and I always support new technologies when available and when it makes some sense to buy the options:)

But let's see I have not made final decision yet related solar roof..

Will be interest to compare prices of PHV and Gen4 with similar trim after incentives (for both) if any.

Well, I have posted the German prices and "trims" and colors many weeks ago in the german Prius Forum:
There you see, that we have the SOLAR, COMFORT (with IPA & ICS Option) and EXECUTIVE trims.
Also, we only get 5 color options.

Two days ago I ordered tho Comfort + IPA & ICS trim. They told me that delivery time might be 4-5 months (but i hope, that it will end up a shorter wait ... as many other places suggested something like April).

Ahh. Yeah I've added the packages and trim levels into that "confirmed prices" thread.

Also, Japan trim levels have been released.

    There's the S, S w/ Navi, A, A w/ Leather Package and A Premium.

S has no head unit (6/7/8" slot), all others use the 11.6" screen

All Japanese PHVs have a 6-speaker stereo.

A Premium gets rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror, HUD
    A Premium and A w/ Leather get 8-way power driver's seat
All "A" trim levels get BSM, ICS, S-IPA, footwell lighting and chrome vent surrounds.
