Recently picked up a Prius and noticed that one of the tires sounded like it had a flat spot on it. Was noticeable at higher speeds. Replaced the tires yesterday and on the balancing machine the technician showed me that one wheel was not spinning perfectly straight. It had a very slight wobble to it. Where would be a good place to find a replacement wheel? Not trying to spend much on it. Figure a second hand one would be good as long as its straight. Any ideas? Thanks!
I see you live in NY. Here in So Cal, there are places one can take a bent or warped rim and have it fixed. I did this alot, to the point of not wanting specialty rims anymore. I would look under "Rim Repair" in your area.
Thanks for the input. Not sure if it hit a pot hole before my ownership. But I am sure it takes a good amount of force to bend a rim. Should probably check my suspension and alignment as well. Tried ebay and tire rack, they were looking for 130 or so per wheel. Salvage yard in NJ wants 65 and comes with the hubcap. Seems like a much better price. I will definitely also check into rim repair as well. If its the same price as the salvage yard, ill just try to fix my original wheel. Man, this is my second post here and you guys answered so quickly. Really appreciate it! You guys rock!!
I have found the peeps here at PruisChat to be straight shooters. You will find the answer to anything you want to fix or do to your car. In the search bar, if you type in what your issue is, you should find alot of people with responses. Two of my favorites are "The Electric Me" and "Bill the Engineer" for both fun and informative reading. This sight is my favorite pastime between TV and sports. Check out all the interior things that people in here have done!
We do have an small company doing rim repairs in Long Island and they had a shop on wheels also, a truck very well equipt for too. I had use them a few years back for the repair of an expensive cracked aluminum rim
Yeah definitely an awesome forum! I got lucky! Stopped by a friend's shop real quick to check the tires and wheels out. The mechanic came out shaking his head and laughing. Turns out the shop that installed the tires didn't balance the wheels correctly nor did they even remove the old weights when swapping the tires. One of the wheels even had a tire mounted on incorrectly! Don't even know how that's possible! Getting them rebalanced correctly now. Glad I didn't have to pick up a new rim for the car. Thanks again for everyone's help!! Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Ah it's called tire run-out. Lesson learned. Get the tires balanced by a place that knows what it's doing. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Those are good prices. New through the dealership they're something like $350. If you buy from the salvage yard there's the advantage you can look it over carefully (hopefully not also bent), and a lot cheaper too.
