Just wanted feedback from people in snowy/rainy areas--do you feel you really miss the rear window wiper?

Did not realize there isn't one for the prime. I find it very useful on the 2016 prius hatchback

definitely miss that feature a LOT. Anyone know why the Prius back window was designed with a curve?

That curve funnels air, providing a little blowing help for window clearing. The dip also increases visibility... no more snow pile up area like the wiper would leave on the previous generations.

At home we park inside a carport. A week ago I parked for an hour on the street and our Prime got covered in loose snow, I jumped in it and the windshield wipers easily brushed away the snow on the windshield. I turned on the rear defrost and I returned home.

The next morning in the carport, I noticed that the rear window gully was still filled with snow. So I started my trip with the rear defrost going. That snow stayed in place. ... Three days later I finally brushed it off manually.

In my experience, the read defroster seems to loosen the grip of ice. But it is not enough to cause the ice/snow to leave. Nor is there enough air turbulence at normal interstate speed [82mph] for the snow to leave on it's own.

was watching a show on car manufacturing the other day. they were building a peugeot with curved rear glass, and claiming it was the only one in the world.

interestingly, some nodders here remove the rear wiper from their pri.

I rarely use the rear wiper on our 3rd gen; it doesn't sweep much area, when I do use it. I suppose to clear snow it's most needed.

same. depends on the weather. i probably use it a half dozen times a winter. but i don't have a regular commute that might take me out in the snow more often.

I have been using RainEx on my glass for awhile. I thought that is Miss the rear wiper, but the RainEx makes it shed water rapidly. Don't know about how it would handle the frozen water versions though. I think that it may help with the release from the glass.

This is likely going to end up my top annoyance with this car. In my other car that lacks a rear wiper, I carry a hand squeegee to clear the rear window at stopping points. I don't care much about rain because I can see right through it, it's snow, ice and slush that's the problem.

Like the regular Prius, air flow over the rear window only happens at slow speeds. So, clearing needed to happen then.

On the highway, there will be a air cushion. If rain ever starts while you're out in the highway, you'll observe the rear stays dry under the layer of air.

It was for design - the designer really wanted that feature. Aerodynamics was also a smaller part. The designer and chief engineer wanted an even more exaggerated double wave but I guess cost and trying to keep the rear window free of distortion made them settle on this final design.

Depends on the snow. If it's wet snow, it just piles up and then blocks your view. If it's fluffy snow, it'll pile up and when it gets high enough, it blows away.
