Good morning from snowy Wisconsin! Owner of a 2004 silver Prius here, finally replacing our other car (a 2003 Jetta wagon) with a Prime Premium. Placed an order in mid-November at our local dealer here in Madison.

I checked in yesterday and I was told that I'm pretty high up on the list thanks to placing an order early. (Their Prius specialist is #1 since he's buying a new Prime for himself. :) ) However, he said there aren't any Primes slated to come directly to them for a while, mostly coastal states. (Which seems to be borne out by the chatter on here.) BUT...they are doing a trade with a coastal dealership and expect a small number to come here very soon.

Problem: I was hoping for Blue Magnetism, because I'm sick of our two silver cars after over a decade with both. :) The ones that are coming are apparently Magnetic Grey and Classic Silver. He changed his own preference from Blue because he didn't want to wait. He's (gently) urging me to consider the same, because otherwise it may be six months due to the popularity of Blue.

Any opinions on the likelihood of this timeline? Our Jetta is not actively falling apart (at this moment, anyhow), but part of me would like to get this done. At the same time, I find the Blue very striking. (NB: I find the grey acceptable. Don't want the silver.)

Would appreciate it if anyone has thoughts for us poor sods in the Upper Midwest. :)

Lovely to be back on this same forum after so many years!

Blue Magnetism is worth waiting for.

Here in Minnesota, that's what I'll be doing.

    Patience.

I run the local hybrid car club I Madison.
At least one of our members has a Prime on order and was told it won't be until January at the earliest before they will see their Prime. Originally was told November. He is definitely waiting.
Road trip or having one shipped would be your only options to get one sooner. Shipping can be $1,000 or so depending on where it's coming from.

I thought silver was out too, but then I saw a silver Prime at a dealership in Frederick Maryland was was impressed by the way it looked. Not a dull silver like my Hyundai Accent, but rather "sparkly."

Anyway, there is a blue Prime Advanced at Younger Toyota in Haegerstown Maryland where I bought my Prime. (There is also a absolutely red 2014 Prius C there, which is the car I traded in. :) )

The other colors have grown on me, but I'm still happy to be taking delivery of my blue magnesium/moonstone in January. Looks like I might have gotten my order in before the rush for blue (November 12th).

Thanks, everyone. To be clear, I do actually like silver, but I'm just tired of it after over a decade of two silver cars. :) It sounds like things are utterly unclear as to when blue will be available here. Apparently I'm #2 on our dealership's list, but even so...they claim they haven't heard anything about when they'll get vehicles that aren't part of a swap/trade with another dealer.

A road trip sounds theoretically fun, but is also something I honestly don't have much time for. I'm running this by my family to see what they think...

I have always been a BLUE color guy ... but when I saw the Prime in RED, I fell in love with it. :)

The sales person I'm working with advised me to order red or blue "so you can see them in the snow". (I'm in Minnesota.)

But one thing I dislike about the Prius is how hot the interior gets in the summer. So I want to buy a light colored car with light colored interior. Will probably go with titanium & moonstone (or whatever they call the light-colored interior).

I decided to wait rather than compromise on trim or color. After all, waiting a couple months quickly fades into memory compared to keeping a car for years that is not quite what I wanted.

Hmmmm..... Seems like a lot of folks are #2 on the dealership's list. Didn't realize so many folks could share a place in line.

Being 2nd in line or 200th does not matter much when you are standing in front of a brick wall.

    You whisses:
    1. Find the car you want with one of the Internet searches.
    2. Contact the dealer and ask for whoever sells to out-of-state buyers.
    3. Put a deposit on the car (earnest money!)
    4. Negotiate the deal: may involve conference call with banker and finance people.
    5. Send everything overnight mail, registered, and buy the car.
    6. Buy a cheap flight, 2-3 weeks out, on a Thursday.
    7. Let them pick you up at airport to have the car that evening or head to hotel for nice dinner and nap.
    8. Friday morning, finish any paper work; grab the keys, and; drive home.
When the Decatur sales lady said,"What do you think of the pretty tail lights."

I squatted into a sitting position about 10 yards behind the car and said,"Well if I drove it from here, GREAT!" ... She laughed.

I appreciate the local dealers have a tough job but especially in Huntsville and SouthEast Toyota, we are not 'friends' and do not respect each other. They want me to buy their most expensive car with all the extra 'port options'. The ONLY time they negotiate is when I get up and walk to the door.

Things could go wrong with the deal I'm working on. Just so far, it looks to be a fair deal for all.

    Technically, it's correct.

Overdrive just means the ratio between the engine speed and the "drive shaft" speed can be less than one (i.e. the drive shaft can turn faster than the engine).

Think about it. In a Prius, the drive shaft can turn when the engine isn't turning at all (ratio zero), or it can turn really fast while the engine is at idle speed (ratio much less than one). So, technically, the Prius has a single-speed cvt with overdrive, though describing the HSD system that way is a little dumb. But constant-mesh, dual-motor, electric continuously variable transmission is word-salad to the un-Prius-initiated.
