I bought one of these that says it fits my 2015 Prius.... I get I can take out the old one to add this - but notice the usb cable from the back of two ports - is there a female usb port behind the stock panel ? If not how the heck would I then get power to the usbs with this configuration ? Thanks for looking....
Well I fried my Cell phone trying t hook this up...ugh ! I connected the Black/White wire from car's cig of the Black/White wire of Cig on the panel and the Black wire of car's cig to the Black wire on Cig on the replacement panel... had no power going to panel.. yet if I plugged in cig power adapter from new panel into old one it worked ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also tried to tie in a USB block switch for a Toyota red to Blk/wht and blk to black - that did not work either when car was on... yet if I took red to fuse block by the engine the usb block switch worked ?... Dazed and confused - need help. I also could not figure how to get a wire from engine compartment to inside under dash - ?????
First question ... do you want those USB outlets just to have power so you can charge stuff, or do you want them connected to the headunit so you can play music from them? If you just want power, easiest thing is probably to get some 12 volt-to-USB charge adapter and wire it to the 12 V source along with the cig socket, and plug the USB end into that. If you want to play music, it'll have to be plugged into the USB cable from the headunit (the connector on the headunit itself may be a nonstandard shape, but there are adapter cables on eBay). I'm not sure I can explain your problems getting power with the connections you describe, which sound like you might have just overlooked something simple, but I wasn't there. But I would not recommend routing wires through the firewall grommet any time you don't have to; if you're looking for power inside the cabin or in the instrument panel, I'd recommend going to the inside fusebox (over the driver's knees), not the engine-compartment one. If I wanted power for the cig socket, I would keep it dead simple and just use those wires right there. If those are the ones connected to the stock socket, and you know you get power from there, and yet you somehow didn't when trying to use them directly, that's a strong hint that maybe your connection technique was just a little off. -Chap
Hi Chap...just to power the USBs no music to radio needed. How would I tap the fuse panel above knee ... I have few empty sockets but no tabs to connect to ? I thought I would be able to tap off socket plug of cig outlet when I disconnected harness the 2 wires are blk/WHT I assume power and blk which would be ground ? This did not power the USBs for some reason when I used connectors. SAMSUNG-SM-G891A ?
In these cars, the white-with-black-stripe is often the ground. Always safest to (a) check the wiring diagram, (b) check with a meter, or (c) both. So you might have just had your USB powered backwards. -Chap
