Who said anything about letting them touch the car? Hahaha. I meant that I'm going to find a Prius c on the lot and take off a damn lug nut to see what it looks like. I'll put it back on when done. iPhone ?
FWIW my spares all look exactly like the one in Mendel's picture - the reason I changed them to the Gorillas is that the Gorillas are blind (i.e. the thread does not go all the way through, but is deep enough for the nut to function correctly). The regular nuts are threaded right through allowing salt and nasty road-crud to get into the threads
My snow tires are on Corolla rims, and the plain lug nuts are what I'm using. Here my complete notes: Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471 (2003-2008 corolla or matrix, CE, LS, S) steel rim lug nuts, part no: 90942-01007 (plain, open-ended, galvanized) This is a 5 lug nut rim though, but maybe the lug nuts are similar. Your mention of heading to dealership makes a lot of sense. They should stock the best ones, and can advise.
I found a picture on eBay... These appear to be the stock lug nuts on the OEM steel wheels, so it would seem that that's what the car came with. iPhone ?
Closed lug nuts like that keep the studs from rusting better. I make do with the open ended ones I have by putting a little dab of a wax/oil rust protectorant on the ends. Plus a 2" ABS end cap on the centre opening makes it look a bit more finished:
These are the wrong style of lugnuts for your steel wheels! This style is what you need/want. Note that the base that makes contact with your wheels are cone shaped, not flat like the ones you have now. These black acorn lugnuts would look good on your car: http://a.co/6Df4r8z
I did not go to the dealer last night. I need the new TPMS sensors programmed and am going to my tire guy tomorrow to get it done. I'll ask him about the lug nuts. I've seen pictures of other model Toyotas with stock steel wheels using the same exact shape lug nut, the mag style. Someone cleverly mentioned somewhere that most spare wheels are steel and are mounted with the stock lug nuts, so I know it's not totally incorrect. Whether it is the best option is to be determined. In the meantime, AGAIN, if someone with a Prius c that has the OEM steel wheels with hubcaps can pop a hubcap off and take a picture of their lug nuts, that would be extremely helpful. That one picture I posted from eBay looks like it has mag style lug nuts, but I'd like a closer look at exactly how they bolt up. iPhone ?
The lug nuts for alloys have both the captured washer (for use with alloy rims) and the proper taper at the base, for use with steel rims. So they'll work fine with the temp spare, for example. Only thing: they look a little odd with steel rims, are quite tall, and the washers are doing nothing.
Thanks for the link, those look good. The color blends in, and the flared base prevents socket damage to the rim. I've noted the info. What I'd really like is a similar nut, except closed end, for better rust prevention on the stud. Trouble is: they a Still as far as I can see, the seat on the ones you link is the same as mine, the same cone shape. I got my snow tires and rims at a Toyota dealership, they did the first install, spec'd both the rims and the nuts. The picture of my snow tire lug nut I posted before was a stock picture, the result of googling the part number. I took a look through my photos, dug up an actual pic of mine: I kind of prefer the chrome alternative to your link: Or the closed end version in black: (though it's a bit tall, I guess to be one-size-fits-all)
My guess is that you are not going to find the shorter closed end style. They don't want you to tighten the lugnut on a long stud, which will stop when the stud hits the closed end inside, while leaving your wheel loose.
So, I went to a dealership by work. I hopped out and tried to quickly pop off a hubcap on a 2012 c. (I confirmed it was there in their inventory before I went...) I couldn't get the hubcap off and didn't want to break it. Also, a concerned salesmen came out and asked what he could help me with... I laughed and pointed to my car, which I had parked right in front of the c that I was trying to peek at. He wouldn't take the hubcap off of their's (or allow me to), but he did shine some line behind for me to get a picture. The trouble is that I can still not see the SEAT of the lug nut. It is one of the open-ended ones, but I can't tell whether it's flat (or mag style) or conical! iPhone ?
I have no problem buying longer ones. The sticking out doesn't bother me. I'm not putting the hubcaps on. The ones I have on now stick out, and I kinda like how it looks. I just want close-ended because I don't like the idea of the studs being exposed. I see that Toyota does this, but I'd still rather have the studs protected from the elements. iPhone ?
This picture is a little better... View attachment 121641 I'm about to bribe another Prius c owner on here with a gift card or something. Please take off your hubcap, and get me a GOOD picture! I'm begging! iPhone ?
You don't need a picture, the fact that you posted in your first post, that the lugnuts don't seat properly into the depressions on the wheel surface, says that you: Either need lugnuts with conical/acorn type base, or the Toyota type mag style lugnut with the captured washer AND a tapered base so it can properly seat into a steel wheel (usually the temporary spare tire). The lugnuts you have are Toyota oem style for alloy wheels. The open ended lugnuts on the c with oem steel wheels will definitely have conical bases like the ones pictured from Amazon.
This might help: WHEEL NUT type A for 2013 Toyota Prius C|90942-01007 : Toyota Online Parts | toyotaonlineparts.com | Toyota Parts Online The "parts notes" in the link seem kinda hooped, not agreeing with the diagram. The dealership parts department should be able to sort this out, btw.
I've seen a few different versions of that picture by looking on various part lookup sites... "A" has a flat seat, as does the more obvious stock one. The one labeled "C" may be the one I need. It appears to have a conical seat. iPhone ?
The part number for the nuts I'm using on my (Corolla) steel rims is 90942-01007, it IS the open-ended nut (type A) spec'd.
