It emulates a CVT, but it is really a one speed manual without an operable clutch. Nothing ever shifts, let alone automatically.

P is just D with a pawl stuck in the gears so they don't turn.
R is just D with Motor Generator/2 spinning 'backwards'. (MG/2's speed is proportional to the vehicle speed, spin it twice as fast, you go twice as fast, spin it the other way, you go backwards.)
N is just D with all electricity cut off from MG/1 and MG/2.
    D is just D. :)
B is Just D with the engine spinning as an unfueled air pump when braking,

Gave up my 2012 4Runner Limited for the 2013 Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon. Not an uppercase v. Only 2010 Prius used uppercase numerals for model designation).v not V for the Prius v wagon . Loved the 4Runner and thoroughly enjoying my first hybrid.

A 2000 Camry V6 that is still sitting in front of the house (and is now the official Labrador transport vehicle). That car was so good to me that I can't let it go!

If it is any consolation, the Prius has a single speed transmission with no operable clutch or torque converter. It emulates a CVT but nothing ever shifts.

This is the slightly simpler Gen 2 transaxle

My family is now a 5 car all Toyota family, Son's family with 3 drivers has a Sienna 6-7 persons in the family minivan, Prius hatchback for a 40 mile commute, Prius v recent addition for a run around with room for 3 kids in back in a pinch. An Avalon plushmobile for my wife and my Prius v for my runs to the dump and grandkids runs. I recently toyed with getting a RAV4h for the seat height but my back got better. Never got even to the point of getting a quote.

Ford Escape hybrid. Love the 20 more MPG I get with the v, with almost the same space in the back.

We had a 03 Taurus sel avg 20mpg.
Shopped for over a year and decided on the v.
Especially after our brake booster started going out and wasn't able to stop I NC a emergency Unless we slammed it in park.

We were averaging 48 to 50mpg in the v until we moved which is more hills and now avg 38mpg.

Miss the Taurus power but rather the mpg.

2002 SAAB 95 Wagon. Phenomenal fuel efficient vehicle for its era. Miss the seats, stereo, night dash and very rarely the power.

2014 v. Love the MPG, utility and everything hybrid about it.

I sold my 2007 Toyota Tacoma to buy my 2017 Prius v. Loved the truck, but it was a stick shift, and my clutch pressing knee was starting to give out.
