2011 Prius RHD Replacement Head Unit Leads

Hello All,

I have recently purchased a used 2011 Prius and I'm loving it so far but, want to replace the head unit with something new. I'm in the UK and this is a right hand drive Prius so I'd like to know what leads and/or adapters I'll need for the car to install a new head unit. The Prius has the Navi unit that came with the car, steering wheel controls and the OEM reverse camera and I'm looking to replace it with something like the Pioneer SPH-DA120.

I haven't settled on that specific model for sure but, I'd like something like that. It seems all new head units have standard ISO connectors for everything but, the Prius has proprietary connectors. From what I've read on here and elsewhere it looks like I'd need 3 separate Toyota to ISO leads/adapters - is that correct?

One for the car audio power and connections
One for the steering wheel controls
One for the reverse camera

Are there any universal kits that include the adapters for all functions? Any specific models on the leads I should use? Any particular brand I should look at? Thanks in advance and thanks for all the useful information on this forum

Car details are:
2011 Toyota Prius T Spirit VVT-i CVT, UK, right-hand drive
OEM Navi head unit
OEM steering wheel controls
OEM reverse camera

 

So far I've found this:

Looks to cover the car stereo connections and steering wheel controls (2 in 1) so I think I would just need to add a reverse camera ISO harness and could then fit any aftermarket head unit.

 

Ok looks like this is the reverse camera retention lead I need:

incartec 27-249

So... This will run something like £15 + £25 for the specialized leads and another £50 I'm guessing for the din kit and cage + the head unit itself. Assuming all of these are right and there isn't a better, all-in-one lead kit or something that isn't too bad to make the Prius completely ISO compatible. That's also assuming I didn't miss anything and steering wheel controls, audio, etc would all be retained.

Would love to hear any alternative recommendations you may have though - thanks.

 

Haven't found a full kit or anything better so it looks like I'm going to go with them. These 3 separate leads to handle steering wheel controls, power and connections for the new head unit and the reverse camera adapter. I also haven't found a better aftermarket head unit than the Pioneer SPH-DA120 in my price range. I'd love to get one of the newer AVX units or a Kenwood DDX series but £500-£700 plus the leads and adapters runs this project up quite a bit

The only viable alternative I've found is the Pumpkin Android head unit that can be ordered with the Toyota leads on it. That unit has been mentioned here before and would simplify things as well as give me access to Android apps but, only on Android 4.4; nothing newer. And no iOS or CarPlay of course, only an older version of Waze or Google Maps and (per reviews) the built-in Sat Nav is only mediocre. Unfortunately, it doesn't save me any £ either as it's roughly the same cost as the Pioneer and the Pioneer will allow for Android or iOS mirroring, CarPlay, current Google Mpas or Waze through CarPlay and (again, per reviews) is a more reliable unit with a more responsive screen.

If anyone here has any other recommendations I'd certainly love to hear them - thanks.

 

Another update (a quick one)

I confirmed with 2 separate install companies that these are the leads I'll need so I've ordered all 4 from incartec:

ISO harness 29-648
Pioneer lead for steering wheel controls 29-007
Pioneer Aerial adapter 21-147
Camera retention adapter 27-249

I purchased the Pioneer SPH-DA120 today so just waiting on the leads to come in and get everything installed. As a reminder, the ISO harness is pretty universal for most Toyota's but, the SWC and aerial adapters are specific to right-hand drive Toyota Prius with a Pioneer head unit. The camera retention adapter is very specific and is only listed for the 2011 RHD Prius

 

Ok a post-install update:

Despite confirming the set of leads with 2 separate install companies most were unnecessary. Of the previous list I only used 2, both from incartec:

ISO harness 29-648
Pioneer lead for steering wheel controls 29-007

The aerial adapter wasn't needed and neither camera retention lead was correct unfortunately. They both have different adapter ends but, neither fits the 2011 Toyota end so I still need to order the correct part and fit it <sigh>

I used Hyde Park Corner for the install as they were rated well and most recommendations were to use them as they had "hybrid car specialists". My installer was not... He was a nice enough bloke but, he said himself he had never worked on a hybrid before and had only fitted one stereo before. They also included no fascia whatsoever as he said it was not needed when I booked the install. They were wrong and I have 2 sizable gaps on either side of the new head unit I will fix myself.

I worked through the install with him as he was not familiar with the molding pieces to remove, the wiring harness or how to verify anything was working on the head unit itself. Having seen this done via YouTube videos before hand and now, first hand working with him I would recommend anyone wanting to install a new head unit in a gen 3 Prius just do it themselves. It was very straightforward and not complicated at all; all of the leads literally plugged in between the Toyota ends and head unit directly with no taps or other wiring work needed. The mounting brackets and other pieces just came off the old unit and mounted to the new one using the same 4 screws and bolts.

Overall I'm very pleased with the upgrade and new head unit but, it isn't finished yet either. I'll update this thread again with before/middle/after pics of the install stages and wiring adapters/leads used.

Pics from before and after the install yesterday. I will post more once I have fixed the fascia and fitted the correct reverse camera retention lead.

 

A quick update - since the install and incorrect leads were purchased through Halfords I returned them today and complained about the poor installation/support. To my surprise (in a good way) they refunded the full install cost while processing the refund on the leads. Very impressed with the customer service after the install, too bad it wasn't better before it.
